Chapter 1: The Promise She Never Broke

Chapter 1: The Promise She Never Broke

The room fell into complete silence.

Adrian stared at the young maid as though he'd never seen her before.

"What did you just say?"

Tears streamed down the young woman's face, but her grip on the older woman's trembling hand never loosened.

"I said... she was my family."

Adrian shook his head in disbelief.

"No. That's impossible. My grandmother never had another family."

The elderly woman's weak laughter barely rose above a whisper.

"I never had another family," she murmured. "I simply found one."

The maid lowered her eyes.

"My name isn't Emily."

Adrian frowned.

"What?"

"My real name is Grace."

The old woman slowly reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a worn velvet pouch. Inside was a faded photograph.

Adrian took it with trembling hands.

The picture showed his grandmother decades earlier, standing beside a young couple holding a little girl with curly black hair.

"Who are they?" he asked.

The old woman's eyes filled with tears.

"The people who saved my life."

She paused, struggling for breath.

"Forty years ago, my car slid off an icy bridge. I should have died that night. But a poor farming couple pulled me from the river before rescue crews arrived."

Grace quietly continued the story.

"They refused every reward she offered."

The old woman smiled faintly.

"They only asked me to promise one thing."

She looked lovingly at Grace.

"If anything ever happened to them... I would watch over their daughter."

Adrian slowly looked back at Grace.

"Their daughter..."

Grace nodded.

"My parents died in a house fire when I was twelve."

"You..."

"The woman you've known as your housemaid... is the little girl from that photograph."

Adrian's face turned pale.

For years, he had barely acknowledged her existence.

Yet all along...

She had been the person his grandmother loved like her own granddaughter.
