CHAPTER 1 — THE BOX HE COULDN'T FORGET

Silence swallowed the hospital room.

Every monitor continued its steady rhythm.

Every nurse froze.

Every doctor stared.

The old man's trembling hand stretched toward the small wooden box clutched against the boy's chest.

"No..." the wealthy man whispered.

His confident smile vanished.

His face turned pale.

The elderly patient had been unconscious for nearly three months.

Doctors had already warned the family that he would probably never respond again.

Yet...

The moment the little boy entered the room...

He moved.

The chief physician rushed forward.

"Check his vitals! Now!"

Two nurses surrounded the bed.

One adjusted the oxygen mask.

Another examined the old man's pupils.

"He's responding to external stimuli," she gasped.

The arrogant man stepped backward.

"This... this is impossible."

The little boy slowly approached the bed.

His dirty clothes made him look like he belonged anywhere except inside this luxury hospital suite.

Still clutching the carved wooden box, he whispered,

"Grandpa... I'm here."

The old man's fingers twitched again.

A tear escaped from beneath his closed eyelids.

Everyone in the room stopped breathing.

"Did...

Did he just cry?"

The doctor nodded slowly.

"I believe he recognized the boy."

The wealthy man's voice exploded.

"Recognized him? That's ridiculous! My father doesn't even know who this filthy street kid is!"

The boy lowered his head.

"I never wanted anything..."

"I just promised Grandma I'd bring this back."

Every eye shifted toward the antique box.

The old man's shaking fingers pointed directly at it.

The doctor looked at the boy.

"Would you... open it?"

With trembling hands, the boy unlocked the tiny brass clasp.

Inside rested a faded photograph...

Two silver wedding rings...

And a handwritten letter sealed nearly forty years ago.

The old man's heartbeat suddenly climbed.

The monitor began beeping faster.

The entire room erupted into controlled chaos.

The doctor stared at the screen.

"He's trying to wake up."

May you like

For the first time...

The wealthy son looked afraid.
