Chapter 16 - Celeste's Offer.

Celeste looked smaller without the ballroom around her.

There were no chandeliers, no silk gown, no circle of wealthy guests watching her perform grief.

She sat in a plain interview room wearing a gray sweater provided by investigators.

Her hair was pulled back.

Her face had no makeup.

Adrian stood behind a one-way observation window with Chen and a federal prosecutor named Elena Ruiz.

Celeste had asked to speak to Adrian first.

Ruiz refused direct contact until Celeste's attorney agreed that the conversation could be monitored and recorded.

Adrian had no objection.

He wanted a record of every word.

For once, secrets would not belong to Grant.

Celeste's attorney entered the interview room.

A minute later, Adrian entered through the opposite door.

He did not sit immediately.

Celeste looked at him.

"How is Ethan?"

Adrian's expression did not change.

"You do not get to ask that before you tell me where Mara Hale is."

Celeste flinched.

"I don't know exactly where she is."

Adrian turned toward the door.

"Then we're done."

"Wait."

He stopped.

Celeste pressed both hands flat against the table.

"I know where Grant used to move people when he wanted them out of sight."

Adrian turned back.

"Used to?"

"A property near Lake Aster."

The prosecutor listening outside immediately began typing.

Celeste continued.

"It belonged to the Vale family decades ago."

Adrian knew the place.

The Aster Lodge had been a corporate retreat when he was a child.

His grandfather held strategy meetings there.

Adrian sold the property through a subsidiary fifteen years earlier.

At least he thought he had.

"Who owns it now?"

"A holding company Grant controls."

Adrian stared at her.

"How long have you known?"

"About the property? Two years."

"About Mara?"

Celeste looked down.

"Not until recently."

"Define recently."

"Three months."

Adrian felt anger rise.

"You knew a woman was being held and said nothing."

Celeste looked up quickly.

"I did not know she was being held against her will."

"You always have a sentence ready that makes you slightly less guilty."

Celeste's face tightened.

"I am guilty."

Adrian went still.

It was the first time she had said it plainly.

"Of what?"

"Of helping Grant fake Ethan's death."

Her attorney shifted beside her but did not interrupt.

Celeste continued.

"Of lying to you."

Her voice trembled.

"Of letting myself believe Grant when he said Ethan would only be hidden until the trust transfer was complete."

Adrian's face hardened.

"You attended his memorial."

Celeste closed her eyes.

"I know."

"You held my hand."

"I know."

"You chose the flowers."

Celeste's composure broke.

"I know."

Adrian did not raise his voice.

"You watched me stand beside an empty casket and speak about my son in the past tense."

Celeste looked at him through tears.

"I know what I did."

"No."

Adrian leaned forward.

"You know what happened. Ethan knows what you did. I know what you did. Knowing the words is not the same as understanding what you took from him."

Celeste looked away.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Adrian sat at last.

"Why Julia?"

Celeste's face changed.

"Grant told you?"

"Grant told me nothing. His records did. Mercer did. Mara did. Julia did."

Adrian placed a copy of Julia's note on the table.

Celeste read the first line and stopped.

"I had never seen that."

"Why Julia?"

Celeste took a slow breath.

"Because she discovered something Grant had spent most of his life protecting."

Adrian waited.

"The black ledger?"

Celeste nodded.

"Part of it."

"What else?"

"A recording."

Adrian's pulse changed.

"Of whom?"

"Your grandfather."

George Vale had been dead for thirteen years.

He had built the modern Vale empire and left behind a public reputation carefully polished by foundations, museums, and philanthropic donations.

The black ledger had already shown another side.

"What recording?"

Celeste looked toward the mirrored wall, aware investigators were listening.

"Grant told me George Vale recorded private dictation for legal files."

"I know."

"One tape was never filed."

"What is on it?"

Celeste's voice lowered.

"Your grandfather admitting that he used Grant's father as a scapegoat."

Adrian frowned.

"Grant's father?"

"Samuel Sloane."

Adrian knew the name only faintly.

Samuel had been an accountant for a Vale rail subsidiary decades earlier.

He was convicted of financial fraud when Grant was a teenager.

Adrian's grandfather always described Samuel as a thief.

"What did George admit?"

"That Samuel followed orders."

Adrian sat back.

Celeste continued.

"Grant found the tape in 1989."

Felix had said Grant's rise began that year.

Now Adrian understood why.

"He blackmailed my grandfather."

"At first."

"At first?"

Celeste gave a small, bitter smile.

"Grant told me he arrived wanting revenge."

"And stayed for money."

"Power."

The word seemed more accurate.

"George gave him a job, then another, then access. Grant learned every trust, every settlement, every hidden payment."

Celeste looked at Adrian.

"He said your grandfather taught him that respectable families survive by deciding which truths become public."

Adrian felt disgust.

"And Julia found the tape?"

"She found a reference to it in an old trust file."

"How?"

"She was reviewing guardianship documents after Ethan was born."

Adrian's chest tightened.

Julia had been protecting their child before anyone else recognized the danger.

Celeste continued.

"She asked Grant questions."

"He didn't like that."

"No."

"So he targeted her."

Celeste looked down.

"That's what he told me."

Adrian's voice became cold.

"When did he tell you?"

"After Ethan's fake funeral."

Adrian stared at her.

"He told you he helped cause Julia's death and you still stayed in the plan."

Celeste shook her head quickly.

"He did not say he caused it."

"What did he say?"

"He said Julia forced him to solve a problem the hard way."

The euphemism made Adrian's skin crawl.

Celeste's voice cracked.

"That was when I realized what he might do to Ethan if the trust transfer failed."

"And you still did not tell me."

"He had Mara."

"Mara is Hannah's sister. Why would that control you?"

Celeste looked at him.

"Mara was not his only leverage."

Adrian waited.

Celeste's hand moved toward her abdomen, then stopped.

Her attorney leaned forward.

"Celeste, you do not have to discuss private medical information unless it is relevant."

Celeste ignored him.

"Grant had files about me from before I met you."

"What files?"

"Debt. My mother. My brother's arrest. Things I lied about because I was ashamed."

Adrian said nothing.

Celeste continued.

"He introduced us."

Adrian stared at her.

"What?"

"The museum benefit where we met was not an accident."

Adrian remembered Grant encouraging him to attend after months of refusing social events.

Celeste had been seated at Grant's table.

"He placed you in my life."

Celeste nodded.

"At first I didn't know why."

Adrian almost laughed at the scale of manipulation.

"Then when did you know?"

"After we were engaged."

"And you married me anyway."

Celeste's eyes filled again.

"By then I loved the life."

The answer was ugly enough to sound true.

"Did you love me?"

Celeste looked at him for a long moment.

"Sometimes."

Adrian felt almost nothing.

That surprised him.

The marriage had ended emotionally the moment Ethan stepped out of the wall.

Everything after that was paperwork.

"Did you ever love Ethan?"

Celeste's face broke.

"Yes."

Adrian stood.

"Then you should have chosen him."

Celeste whispered.

"I know."

He turned toward the door.

"Lake Aster. What exactly is there?"

Celeste forced herself back into focus.

"An old rehabilitation wing under the lodge. George built it after his stroke. Grant renovated it."

"Entrances?"

"Main house, service road, and a boathouse tunnel."

Adrian looked toward the observation mirror.

Chen was already moving.

"Anything else?"

Celeste nodded.

"A private archive room."

"The recording?"

"Maybe."

"And Mara?"

"If Grant moved her himself, that's where I would look."

Adrian opened the door.

Celeste spoke again.

"Adrian."

He stopped without turning.

"Grant doesn't just want the black ledger."

"What else?"

"He wants Ethan's recorder."

Adrian turned.

"Why?"

"Because he heard Ethan say he recorded everything."

"So?"

Celeste's expression became frightened.

"Because one night Grant went inside the chamber alone."

Adrian waited.

"When he came out, he said something he had never said before."

"What?"

"He said, 'If that boy heard the name, we have a bigger problem than Adrian.'"

Adrian's pulse quickened.

"What name?"

Celeste shook her head.

"I don't know."

Adrian thought of thirty-seven files.

They had listened to many, but not every second of every recording.

There might be another person in Grant's network.

Someone important enough to frighten him.

He left the room and went straight to Priya.

"Search every file for unidentified voices and names."

Priya nodded.

"Already starting."

Chen appeared beside them with her phone in hand.

"Teams are heading to Lake Aster."

"I'm going."

"No."

Adrian stared at her.

"Mara is there because of my family."

"And Grant wants you mobile and emotional."

Adrian looked toward the safe-house camera feed showing Ethan with Miriam.

The old Adrian would have argued until Chen gave up.

The new Adrian understood the difference between action and usefulness.

"Fine."

Chen nodded once.

"We'll bring you the truth."

Two hours later, the Lake Aster team reached the property.

The main lodge was empty.

The underground rehabilitation wing was not.

They found medical supplies, food, clothing, and evidence that someone had been living there recently.

In the last room at the end of the corridor, they found a chair, a small table, and blue thread tied around the window latch.

Mara had been there.

But she was gone.

On the table sat a piece of paper.

Three words were written in Mara's handwriting.

HE MOVED ME.

Below it was a second message.

NOT GRANT.

Adrian stared at the live image.

A different person had moved Mara.

The unknown name on Ethan's recorder had suddenly become the most important secret in the case.

Before Adrian left Celeste's interview, she asked one final question.

"Does Ethan hate me?"

Adrian stopped at the door.

"He is seven."

Celeste looked down.

"That isn't an answer."

"It is the only answer you need."

She looked at him.

Adrian continued.

"He is not responsible for giving you a clean emotional ending."

Celeste flinched.

"I know."

"Do you?"

He returned to the table.

"Because every part of this plan depended on adults making Ethan carry consequences for choices he did not make."

Celeste's eyes filled.

"I never wanted him hurt."

"You keep saying that as if wanting is the final measure of what you did."

Adrian's voice remained controlled.

"You helped make him disappear. You watched me mourn him. You let him live with people who told him his father believed he was dead."

Celeste began to cry.

Adrian did not feel satisfaction.

He felt tired.

"If you want to do one useful thing for him now, tell investigators everything without asking what it earns you."

Celeste looked toward her attorney.

Then back at Adrian.

"I will."

"Good."

Adrian left.

Outside, Ruiz asked whether he believed Celeste.

"About cooperating?"

"Yes."

Adrian looked through the glass.

"I believe she finally understands Grant cannot save her."

Ruiz nodded.

"Sometimes that's enough to get the truth."

Adrian looked away.

It was not redemption.

May you like

It was evidence.

He had learned not to confuse the two.
