Chapter 10 - The Second Wall.

Adrian wanted Hannah moved out of the house immediately.
Hannah refused.
"Ethan asked me not to leave."
"Grant is looking for you."
"Then Grant knows where I work."
"That is exactly the problem."
Hannah folded her arms.
"And where do you want to send me?"
Adrian opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
Safe house sounded ridiculous inside a mansion surrounded by officers, yet the previous night had proven that walls and guards meant nothing if the wrong person had keys.
Chen stepped between them with the patience of someone managing two equally stubborn people.
"Hannah stays on the property only if she remains in the guest wing and under protection."
Hannah looked at Adrian.
"Fine."
Adrian looked at Chen.
"Double the officers."
"Already done."
Ethan appeared at the end of the hallway holding Franklin the stuffed fox.
He had changed into clean clothes.
The tuxedo from the wall was sealed as evidence.
Seeing him in sweatpants and a blue sweater made him look seven again instead of like a witness in a nightmare.
"Why is everybody arguing?"
Adrian immediately softened.
"We're deciding how to keep Hannah safe."
Ethan looked at Hannah.
"She can stay with us."
Hannah smiled faintly.
"That's the plan."
Ethan nodded as if the adults had finally reached the obvious conclusion.
Then he walked to Adrian.
"I remembered something."
Adrian crouched.
"Tell me."
"The second wall."
Hannah's expression changed.
"What second wall?"
Ethan pointed toward the old architectural map still lying on a side table.
"Where Mr. Sloane kept papers."
Adrian felt the day change direction again.
"Show me."
Ethan shook his head.
"I don't want to go there."
Adrian immediately stopped.
"Then you don't."
"But I can tell you."
They brought the map closer.
Ethan pointed toward the original wine cellar beneath the west wing.
"There is a room with bricks."
Adrian almost smiled.
"Most cellar rooms have bricks."
Ethan gave him the look children reserve for adults who are being slow.
"New bricks."
Hannah understood.
"A sealed opening."
Ethan nodded.
"Mr. Sloane went there twice."
"How do you know?"
"He made me wait in the passage."
Adrian looked at Chen.
"We search it."
This time, Adrian did not insist on going first.
Chen's tactical team entered the cellar before him.
That decision would have seemed impossible twenty-four hours earlier.
Now Adrian understood that being a father sometimes meant letting trained people stand in front of danger.
After the team cleared the area, Adrian, Chen, Priya, and Ellis entered.
The original wine cellar was cold and dry.
Dust covered racks of old bottles no one had opened in decades.
At the far end stood a brick wall that was noticeably cleaner than the rest.
New mortar filled the seams.
Chen looked at Adrian.
"Your house has a disturbing number of recent walls."
"I'm beginning to agree."
A forensic officer used a scanner.
The wall was hollow behind the first layer.
They removed several bricks carefully.
A steel door appeared.
It had an electronic keypad.
Priya examined it.
"Modern lock."
"Can you open it?"
"Eventually."
Hannah, watching remotely from the guest wing, spoke through Adrian's phone.
"Try Ethan's birthday."
Adrian looked at the keypad.
"Grant wouldn't use that."
Ethan's voice came through the speaker.
"Mr. Reed did."
Adrian entered 0417.
The lock clicked.
Chen stared at him.
"April seventeenth?"
"Ethan's birthday."
The door opened.
Inside was a compact archive room.
Metal shelves covered three walls.
Boxes held financial statements, medical files, trust documents, passports, and cash.
Adrian felt as if he had entered the physical version of Grant's mind.
Everything was labeled.
Everything was organized.
Nothing was innocent.
Priya photographed the room before anyone touched anything.
One shelf contained folders marked with initials.
A.V.
J.V.
E.V.
C.V.
M.R.
O.M.
Grant had files on Adrian, Julia, Ethan, Celeste, Malcolm Reed, and Owen Mercer.
Another shelf contained files on board members, politicians, regulators, and executives Adrian knew.
Ellis exhaled.
"This isn't just a conspiracy file."
Chen nodded.
"It's leverage."
Adrian opened his own folder under forensic supervision.
It contained medical records, private emails, travel schedules, copies of signatures, photographs of meetings, and notes about his habits.
One page was titled PRESSURE POINTS.
Under it were bullet points.
Julia.
Ethan.
Public reputation.
Vale legacy.
Fear of becoming like father.
Adrian stared at the last line.
His father, Charles Vale, had been brilliant and emotionally distant.
Adrian had spent half his life trying not to repeat that pattern.
Grant knew it.
He had turned Adrian's private fear into a strategic note.
Chen read over his shoulder.
"He profiled you."
"He was my friend for twenty years."
"Apparently he treated friendship as research."
Adrian closed the folder.
Julia's file was worse.
It contained medication schedules, trust drafts, photographs from the hospital, and handwritten notes about her concerns.
One note in Grant's handwriting read:
J. becoming suspicious. Move Mercer closer.
Adrian looked away.
He could not read more yet.
Ethan's folder contained school records, photographs, medical forms, and a timeline beginning before Julia's death.
Grant had been tracking Ethan for years.
Adrian's anger nearly broke through his control.
Then Priya found something else.
A small black server sat beneath the lowest shelf.
"This is live."
Chen frowned.
"Connected to what?"
Priya traced the cables.
"Estate network, outside network, possibly remote backups."
"Can you isolate it?"
"Yes."
She disconnected the external line but left power intact.
The server contained encrypted directories.
One was labeled ORCHARD.
Another was LEGACY.
A third was AFTER VALE.
Adrian pointed.
"Open that one first."
Priya worked for twenty minutes.
The encryption key was not obvious.
Then she found a sticky note under the server shelf.
Grant's arrogance had defeated Grant's security.
The password was GSV_1989.
Grant Sebastian Vale? No.
Adrian recognized the initials differently.
Grant Sloane's first year working for George Vale, Adrian's grandfather.
1989.
The folder opened.
Inside were corporate transition plans dated months before Ethan's supposed death.
Draft press releases.
Board resolutions.
Legal opinions.
A document titled LEADERSHIP CONTINUITY AFTER A.V.
Adrian opened it.
The first paragraph assumed Adrian would no longer be alive by the end of the year.
No euphemism could soften that.
Chen read the dates.
"This was prepared six months ago."
"Before Ethan went to the hospital."
"Yes."
Adrian scrolled.
Grant planned for Peter Doran to become temporary CEO.
Doran's name surprised Adrian.
"Peter is involved?"
Ellis looked at the document.
"Maybe not. This could be a plan Grant never shared with him."
Further down, Martin Kessler was assigned chairmanship of a new holding company.
Celeste would receive a substantial trust distribution.
Malcolm would receive five million.
Mercer would receive two million through a consulting entity.
And Grant would become executive trustee with authority over the Vale Legacy Trust.
Adrian reached the final appendix.
A list of risks.
Risk 1: Ethan located alive.
Response: discredit witness, classify child as confused, establish alternate custody narrative.
Risk 2: Julia original guardianship discovered.
Response: invalidate guardian Hannah Pierce through criminal allegation.
Risk 3: Adrian refuses trust authorization.
Response: initiate medical incapacity strategy.
Risk 4: Adrian discovers full plan before transition.
Response: accelerate Holloway contingency.
Adrian stared at the phrase.
"What is Holloway contingency?"
Chen immediately looked at Priya.
"Search the server."
Priya typed.
The phrase appeared in fourteen files.
Most were encrypted separately.
One was a calendar entry.
HOLLOWAY - 8/27 - 22:00.
Tomorrow night.
Adrian's pulse changed.
"Tomorrow?"
Chen looked at the current date.
"Yes."
Another file contained coordinates.
Priya plotted them.
They led to the abandoned medical transport garage with the blue door.
The place Ethan had been held before the mansion.
Chen's phone rang.
She answered.
Her face changed.
"Repeat that."
Everyone watched her.
She ended the call.
"Captain Voss is missing."
Adrian frowned.
"Missing from where?"
"He never reported for duty this morning."
"Then he's with Grant."
"Maybe."
Chen looked at the Holloway coordinates on the screen.
"Or he's waiting for tomorrow night."
Priya opened one more file.
It contained a single line of text.
If Ethan is recovered, use the father.
Adrian stared at it.
The plan had changed the moment Hannah broke the wall.
Grant no longer needed the boy hidden.
He needed Adrian desperate enough to walk into a trap.
The archive behind the second wall also contained a file labeled HANNAH PIERCE.
Adrian almost refused to open it without her present.
Hannah insisted.
"If he built a file about me, I want to know what he thought mattered."
Inside were employment records, tax forms, photographs, and notes about Mara.
One page proposed a future allegation that Hannah had stolen jewelry from Vale House.
Another listed three expensive items that could be planted in her room.
Hannah read the page twice.
"So that was the plan."
Adrian looked at her.
"Ethan said Grant claimed you were going to steal something."
Hannah gave a humorless smile.
"He was writing the story before the event."
A sealed pouch on the shelf contained one of Celeste's diamond bracelets.
It had already been tagged with Hannah's employee number on a false inventory sheet.
Chen stared at it.
"If Hannah broke the wall and accused them, they planned to find this in her room."
Adrian felt sick.
The conspiracy depended not only on hiding Ethan but on deciding in advance which person would look unbelievable if the truth escaped.
Hannah was a maid accusing a billionaire's wife, attorney, doctor, security chief, and police captain.
Grant assumed class would do the rest.
Adrian looked at the false theft report.
"He thought no one would believe you."
Hannah looked toward the open archive.
"He was almost right."
Adrian met her eyes.
"Not again."
Hannah folded her arms.
"Don't promise everyone will believe me."
Adrian nodded.
"Fair."
"Promise you will look at the evidence before deciding whose title sounds more important."
May you like
Adrian glanced at the rows of files built by respected men.
"That I can promise."
