The 50-Year-Old Man Offered This Advice: 5 Foods You Should Never Leave Overnight — If There’s Any Left Over, Throw It Away

Food safety is something many of us take lightly—until it’s too late. A 50-year-old man once shared an important piece of advice after experiencing severe food poisoning: “If you’re not sure about leftovers, don’t risk it. Some foods simply aren’t safe to keep overnight.”

While refrigeration slows bacterial growth, it does not completely stop it. Certain foods become breeding grounds for harmful bacteria if stored improperly or kept too long. Here are five foods you should be especially cautious about.

1. Cooked Rice

Cooked rice may seem harmless, but it can contain Bacillus cereus, a bacterium that survives cooking. If rice is left at room temperature for too long, these bacteria can multiply and produce toxins that cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Tip: Refrigerate rice within one hour of cooking and consume it within 24 hours.

2. Seafood

Fish, shrimp, and shellfish spoil quickly. Even in the fridge, seafood can develop harmful bacteria and toxins if not stored properly. The smell may not always warn you in time.

Tip: Eat cooked seafood within one day and store it in airtight containers.

3. Leafy Greens with Dressing

Salads mixed with dressing become moist environments where bacteria grow rapidly. Once dressed, leafy vegetables wilt and spoil much faster.

Tip: Store dressing separately and only mix before eating.
