CHAPTER 1 — ONE MILLION

CHAPTER 1 — ONE MILLION

Silence crashed over the ballroom.

Every laugh died.

Every champagne glass stopped halfway to someone's lips.

Julian frowned into the microphone.

"What kind of joke is this?"

The man stepped fully into the light.

He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, his silver cuff links catching the crystal chandeliers above. Calm. Composed. Powerful.

"I said..." he repeated, his voice steady enough to shake the room.

"One million dollars."

No one spoke.

Julian laughed nervously.

"You actually want to buy her?"

The stranger smiled without humor.

"I don't buy people."

His eyes settled on the woman standing frozen on stage.

"I buy freedom."

The wife felt another tear fall.

She didn't recognize him.

But somehow...

...she felt safer than she had in years.

Julian scoffed.

"This is between my wife and me."

The stranger slowly climbed the stage.

"No."

He stopped only a few feet away.

"This stopped being between the two of you the moment you decided to humiliate her in public."

Julian's smile disappeared.

"And who exactly are you?"

The man reached into his jacket.

Every security guard stiffened.

Instead of a weapon...

...he pulled out a thin leather folder.

He handed it to Julian.

"Read page three."

Julian rolled his eyes.

Then he opened it.

His face lost every drop of color.

"This..."

His hands began to shake.

"This isn't possible."

"It became possible six months ago," the stranger answered.

"You signed it yourself."

The ballroom whispered.

"What is it?"

"What did he sign?"

Julian looked at his wife as though seeing her for the first time.

She stared back in confusion.

The stranger finally spoke.

"Your husband sold every share of his company to stay out of bankruptcy."

Julian swallowed hard.

"But he never bothered to read who the buyer was."

The stranger extended his hand toward the stunned woman.

"My name is Alexander Grant."

"I now own everything he thought made him powerful."

Then he looked directly into Julian's terrified eyes.

"And tonight...

May you like

I'm taking back the only thing you never deserved."

Her dignity.
