Chapter 2: The Message He Couldn’t Ignore

Adrian let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding.

Behind him, Olivia leaned closer. “Who was that?”

“No one important,” he said too quickly.

But his hand was already in his pocket.

His phone lit up.

One notification.

Unknown number.

He tapped it.

The first image froze him.

A hospital room.

Margaret—his mother—lying in a thin gown, connected to machines. Her face looked smaller than he remembered, fragile in a way he had never allowed himself to see.

His breath caught.

Then another message appeared.

“If you’re reading this, it means I made it to your wedding.”

His thumb trembled as he scrolled.

A voice recording followed.

He pressed play.

Her voice filled his ear—soft, weak, but steady.

“Adrian… I was diagnosed six months ago. Stage four. I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to be a burden on your new life.”

His face slowly drained of color.

“I sold my house,” her voice continued. “Everything I had. I used it to pay for your education when you were younger… and I thought… maybe I could just see you happy one last time.”

A pause. A faint breath.

“I’m not angry that you asked me to leave. I understand what you’re building. I just… wanted to see you become it.”

Adrian’s hand tightened around the phone.

Another image loaded.

A younger version of him—graduation day. His mother standing alone in the back row, clapping the loudest.

Then another.

Her holding a small box labeled: “Adrian’s Future Fund.”

His throat tightened painfully.

A final message appeared.

“I didn’t come to ruin your wedding. I came to say goodbye.”

His head snapped up.

The church suddenly felt too bright. Too loud. Too alive.

And for the first time, he wasn’t seeing guests.

He was seeing everything he had chosen to ignore.
