CHAPTER 4 — The Heir and the Enemy

Two days later, Ethan learned the final layer of the lie.

A sealed inheritance document revealed Margaret’s real motive.

If Ava remained Ethan’s legal wife, she controlled the Rivas trust through marriage clauses Ethan had never read.

But if Ava were declared incompetent—or forced to sign away her rights—control would revert fully to Margaret.

It wasn’t just control.

It was billions.

Ethan slammed the file shut.

“You didn’t do this for me,” he said. “You did this for yourself.”

Margaret finally broke her silence.

“I did it to save this family from her.”

Ava, now sitting upright in her hospital bed, met Margaret’s gaze.

“No,” she said softly. “You did it because you were losing control.”

Security entered the room.

Ethan didn’t look away from his mother as he spoke.

“Take her into custody.”

Margaret’s expression didn’t change until the handcuffs clicked.

Then something inside her finally cracked.

“You’ll regret this, Ethan.”

May you like

He shook his head.

“No. I’ll only regret I didn’t see it sooner.”
