A year passed.
Rose celebrated her second birthday surrounded by laughter instead of lawyers.
She ran through the backyard while Ethan chased her with bubbles, laughing louder than Amelia had ever heard.
Later that evening, after everyone had gone home, Ethan handed Amelia a small envelope.
She looked confused.
Inside wasn't a ring.

"I spent years building an empire," he said.
"But the greatest investment I'll ever make is being her father."
Amelia looked at him carefully.
"You've changed."
"I had to."
He took a deep breath.
"I'm not asking you to forgive me tonight."
"I'm asking for the chance to keep earning your trust tomorrow."
She didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she watched him kneel to help Rose catch fireflies in a glass jar.
