Chapter 12 - The Missing Drive

Jonathan did not tell Charles about the melody.
He did not tell Celeste.
He did not even tell the security staff beyond Paul and Detective Bell.
The fewer people who knew, the harder it would be for Victor to learn.
Hazel hummed the tune while Paul recorded the notes.
A music teacher working remotely translated the melody into eight notes.
Using Evelyn's old habit of assigning numbers to scale positions, they produced several possible number sequences.
None meant anything yet.
Then Maria remembered the red notebook.
Evelyn had written tiny numbers beside drawings of dresses.
On one page, the same eight-note pattern appeared beside the words ASH FALLS, ECHO ANSWERS.
Rebecca compared the numbers to the encryption prompt on a cloned copy of one recovered memory card.
The system allowed eight digits.
They tried the sequence.
The drive opened.
Inside were financial spreadsheets and scanned receipts.
No dash-camera video.
But one text file contained a clue.
IF THEY FIND THIS ONE, THE ROAD IS WITH THE RABBIT.
Hazel read the sentence after Jonathan explained it was written by her mother.
"My rabbit?"
Everyone looked toward the stuffed animal Hazel had brought from the mansion.
It was the same rabbit that had sat on her bed since infancy.
Maria picked it up carefully.
One seam along the back had been repaired by hand.
"Evelyn did this."
Jonathan remembered the rabbit tearing when Hazel was two.
Evelyn had insisted on fixing it herself.
Paul used a small seam ripper.
Inside the stuffing was a narrow plastic sleeve.
It contained a microSD card.
Jonathan stared at it.
Evelyn had hidden the most important evidence inside her daughter's favorite toy.
For four years, Hazel had slept beside it.
Victor had searched the room and missed it.
Paul created a forensic copy before anyone viewed the files.
The card contained several video clips from Evelyn's car.
The final clip began seventeen minutes before the crash.
The camera faced forward through the windshield.
Rain speckled the glass.
Evelyn's voice was audible as she called Maria.
Jonathan sat between Bell and Maria while Hazel remained upstairs with Dr. Levin.
He listened to his late wife breathe.
He listened to Maria answer.
The conversation unfolded exactly as Maria had described.
Evelyn said Victor had been at the garage.
Maria urged her to pull over.
Evelyn said Charles knew everything.
Then another sound appeared in the recording.
A phone notification.
Evelyn read something aloud.
"He says if I go to Jonathan, I'll regret it."
Bell paused the video.
"Who sent that?"
The camera did not show the phone screen.
They resumed.
Maria asked who Evelyn meant.
Evelyn answered.
"Victor."
Jonathan's hand curled into a fist.
The car continued through rain.
Evelyn pressed the brake.
A scraping sound followed.
She gasped.
Maria's voice became urgent through the speaker.
"Pull over now."
Evelyn tried.
The car drifted.
She corrected.
For several seconds, it appeared she might regain control.
Then a black SUV appeared behind her.
Jonathan leaned toward the screen.
The SUV accelerated.
It moved close enough that its headlights filled the camera.
Evelyn whispered one word.
"Victor."
Jonathan stopped breathing.
The SUV did not strike her car.
It did something worse in a subtler way.
It stayed inches from her rear bumper on a rain-soaked road while her brakes were failing.
Evelyn tried to slow.
The SUV crowded her.
She moved toward the shoulder.
The vehicle followed.
"He's pushing me," Evelyn said.
Maria shouted through the phone.
Then the sedan entered the curve.
The rear wheels lost traction.
The camera spun toward trees and darkness.
The final image froze after impact.
Jonathan could not move.
Bell stopped the video.
Maria was crying openly now.
"He was there."
Jonathan whispered the words.
"Victor was there."
Bell nodded cautiously.
"We need to identify the SUV conclusively."
Paul had already begun enhancing the frames.
One partial license plate became visible.
The first three characters matched a vehicle Victor owned at the time.
Insurance records confirmed he sold that SUV two weeks after Evelyn died.
Jonathan felt grief become something sharper.
For years he had believed Evelyn died alone in bad weather.
She had not been alone.
His brother had been behind her.
Maybe Victor had not planned the crash exactly as it happened.
But he had followed a frightened woman in a compromised car and driven close enough to make escape harder.
The distinction between accident and intention became something prosecutors would argue later.
Jonathan no longer needed the argument to understand betrayal.
Bell's controlled meeting with Victor was scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at an abandoned warehouse near the river.
Charles would wear a wire.
He would tell Victor that Hazel was waiting in a vehicle outside.
No child would actually be there.
Jonathan wanted to attend.
Maria reminded him of her earlier warning.
"Hazel needs you here."
This time Jonathan did not resist.
"You're right."
Maria looked almost surprised.
"I can learn."
He tried to smile.
It did not last.
At 7:41 p.m., Bell sent a secure message.
VICTOR DIDN'T SHOW.
At 7:48, another message arrived.
CHARLES RECEIVED TEXT: WRONG GIRL.
Jonathan read it twice.
Then every light in the safe house went out.
The backup generator started immediately.
Paul's guards moved through the house.
Jonathan ran upstairs.
Hazel's bedroom door was open.
The bed was empty.
Maria's room was empty too.
His heart stopped.
"HAZEL!"
No answer.
He raced down the hall.
A guard shouted from the back stairwell.
Jonathan followed.
Maria was sitting on the floor near the mudroom, dizzy but conscious.
Her sling had been torn loose.
"Hazel," Jonathan gasped.
Maria pointed toward the back door.
"A woman."
"Who?"
"Celeste."
Jonathan felt the world tilt.
"She came through the laundry entrance."
"She said there was a fire outside."
"Hazel ran toward me."
"Then someone hit the lights."
Maria tried to stand.
Jonathan helped her.
"Did Celeste take her?"
Maria shook her head.
"I don't know."
"I heard Hazel scream your name."
Paul shouted from outside.
A car had torn away from the rear service lane.
Security cameras captured only the taillights.
Jonathan grabbed his phone.
A message was waiting from Celeste.
I HAVE HER.
His vision narrowed.
Then a second message arrived.
BRING THE DASH CARD.
A third followed.
COME ALONE OR VICTOR GETS TO HER FIRST.
Jonathan showed Bell over the phone.
The detective immediately began tracing the number.
Maria stared at the messages.
"She's lying about something."
Jonathan looked at her.
"What?"
"If Celeste had Hazel, why warn you about Victor getting to her first?"
Jonathan read the sentence again.
Maria was right.
The wording did not fit.
Paul came through the back door holding something small.
"We found this in the driveway."
It was Hazel's purple hair clip.
Jonathan gripped it.
Then a voice sounded from the kitchen pantry.
"Daddy?"
Everyone froze.
Jonathan ran.
Hazel crawled out from behind stacked grocery boxes, shaking and crying.
He dropped to his knees and pulled her into his arms.
"You're here."
She clung to him.
"Maria told me to hide."
Jonathan looked toward Maria.
She had protected Hazel again even while injured.
"What happened?" he asked.
Hazel wiped her face.
"Celeste came in."
"She said Uncle Victor was outside."
"Maria pushed me into the pantry and told me not to make a sound."
Jonathan kissed the top of her head.
"You did exactly right."
Hazel looked scared.
"Celeste took something from the table."
Jonathan's stomach dropped.
"What?"
Paul ran to the temporary evidence desk.
The forensic clone of Evelyn's dash card was still there.
The original microSD card was gone.
Celeste had never taken Hazel.
She had used Hazel as the threat while stealing the evidence.
Jonathan's phone rang again.
This time Victor's voice came through.
"You should stop believing your wife, Jon."
Jonathan held Hazel tighter.
"She's not my wife anymore."
Victor laughed.
"Good."
"Because she just stole the only thing keeping me from making a deal."
Jonathan's eyes narrowed.
"What do you mean?"
Victor's voice dropped.
"Celeste isn't running from me."
May you like
"She's coming to me."
The line went dead.
