Chapter 10 - The Plan Celeste Changed

Charles Vale was arrested in the greenhouse cellar.
He did not resist.
He did not raise his voice.
He simply asked for his attorney with the calm of a man who had spent forty years teaching other people to do the same.
Before police led him away, he looked at Jonathan one last time.
"You married the part of this you still don't understand."
Jonathan wanted to follow him.
Detective Bell stopped him.
"Let us interview him."
"He knows where Victor is."
"Probably."
"And he says Celeste designed Phase Three."
"Which may be true or may be meant to redirect us."
Jonathan looked at the open tunnel beneath the greenhouse.
Every answer in the house seemed built to produce two more questions.
Bell's team photographed the cellar for hours.
The PHASE THREE folder contained handwritten notes in three different styles.
Victor's handwriting appeared beside financial steps.
Charles's handwriting appeared beside legal procedures.
The third handwriting belonged to Celeste.
Jonathan recognized it from grocery lists and birthday cards.
Her notes were not peripheral.
They were detailed.
MAKE HAZEL FEEL WATCHED.
INTERRUPT SLEEP WITHOUT LEAVING PHYSICAL PROOF.
CREATE CONFLICT AT SCHOOL.
MAKE JONATHAN DEFEND ME PUBLICLY BEFORE FIRST EVALUATION.
Jonathan read the last line twice.
Celeste had not merely followed Victor's instructions.
She had understood Jonathan's personality well enough to make his loyalty part of the evidence.
If he publicly defended Celeste against concerns about Hazel, later accusations would make him look compromised.
The plan weaponized his pride.
Maria stood beside him.
"She studied all of us."
Jonathan nodded.
"I thought she was trying to become part of the family."
Maria's voice was quiet.
"She was."
"Just not for the reason you thought."
Bell found another section of the folder labeled MARIA.
Jonathan felt dread before he opened it.
Inside were photographs of Maria entering a credit union, visiting her sister, buying groceries, and attending church with friends.
Someone had followed her for months.
A typed summary listed her work history, debts, relatives, and immigration status.
Maria read the page without expression.
Then she folded it shut.
"They were looking for something to use against me."
Bell nodded.
"It appears so."
"Did they find anything?"
"Nothing criminal."
Maria gave a humorless smile.
"How disappointing for them."
Jonathan looked at the final page.
One line was highlighted.
IF MARIA INTERFERES, FRAME AS FINANCIAL MOTIVE.
Beneath it was a draft accusation claiming Maria manipulated Hazel to gain access to the trust.
The accusation would have sounded plausible once Evelyn's amendment naming Maria as co-trustee became known.
Jonathan understood the cruelty of it.
Evelyn's act of trust had been prepared as evidence of Maria's greed.
"They were going to say she abused Hazel for money," Jonathan said.
Maria's jaw tightened.
"After they abused Hazel for money."
Bell closed the folder.
"We have enough to move on conspiracy charges once prosecutors review it."
Jonathan looked at him.
"And Celeste?"
"We need to find her."
Her attorney claimed he had not spoken to her since the hotel meeting.
Her phone was turned off.
Her credit cards had not been used.
Her car remained in a downtown parking garage.
By evening, Celeste had vanished.
Victor was still missing too.
Charles was in custody.
Rook remained jailed after a judge denied immediate release because of flight risk.
The conspiracy was collapsing, but its two most volatile participants were somewhere outside the police net.
Jonathan moved Hazel out of the mansion that night.
He did not tell anyone outside a small circle where they were going.
Paul arranged a secure rental home under a corporate name forty minutes away.
Maria came with them after her doctor cleared her to rest outside the hospital.
Hazel protested leaving her bedroom.
"Mom's things are there."
Jonathan knelt beside her suitcase.
"We're not leaving forever."
"How long?"
"Until the house is safe."
Hazel looked toward Maria.
"Is Maria coming?"
"Yes."
Hazel immediately zipped her bag.
The ease of that decision told Jonathan where safety lived for his daughter now.
Not in the mansion.
In a person.
The rental house was smaller, quieter, and almost aggressively ordinary.
No marble floors.
No staff corridors.
No hidden cellar.
Hazel chose the bedroom with yellow walls.
Maria slept across the hall.
Jonathan took the room nearest the stairs.
The first night, he woke at 2:11 a.m. to find Hazel standing in his doorway.
"I heard Mom."
Jonathan sat up immediately.
"Where?"
Hazel pointed toward the hallway vent.
His body went cold.
Maria appeared behind her.
"I heard it too."
Jonathan got out of bed.
A faint woman's voice drifted through the house.
Not Evelyn's voice.
Celeste's.
"Hazel."
The word echoed softly from somewhere downstairs.
Paul's security team moved instantly.
Jonathan kept Hazel behind him as they searched.
The voice repeated.
"Hazel, I know you can hear me."
It came from the living room.
A small Bluetooth speaker sat on the mantel.
No one in the family had placed it there.
Paul disconnected it.
"Remote connection."
Jonathan stared at the device.
Celeste had found the safe house.
Or someone had given her the address.
Hazel began to shake.
Maria pulled her close.
Then Jonathan's phone rang from an unknown number.
He answered on speaker with Bell listening through a second device.
Celeste's voice filled the room.
"You moved her."
Jonathan's anger was immediate.
"Stay away from my daughter."
"Your daughter?"
Celeste laughed softly.
"You still think this is about custody."
"Where are you?"
"Did Charles tell you I wrote Phase Three?"
Jonathan said nothing.
"He left out why."
"Enlighten me."
Celeste's tone sharpened.
"Victor's original plan was sloppy."
"He wanted to make Hazel look unstable, get control for six months, empty the trust, and disappear."
"I realized temporary control was useless."
Maria stared at the phone.
Jonathan felt sick.
Celeste continued.
"I changed the plan so you would look unfit too."
"Then Victor would control the trust long enough to transfer the assets."
"And after that?" Jonathan asked.
Celeste was silent for a beat.
"After that, Victor was supposed to have an accident."
Jonathan's blood went cold.
Even Bell, listening remotely, did not interrupt.
"You planned to kill my brother?"
Celeste gave a tired laugh.
"Don't sound sentimental now."
"Where is Victor?"
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"Not this time."
Jonathan looked at Maria.
Her face showed the same thought.
Celeste and Victor were no longer partners.
They were competing threats.
"Why call me?" Jonathan asked.
"Because Victor has something I need."
"The key?"
"No."
"Dana lost the key at the storage facility."
Jonathan did not correct her.
Police had the key.
"Then what?"
Celeste lowered her voice.
"The original recording from Evelyn's car."
Jonathan froze.
"What recording?"
"There was a dash camera."
He stared at the phone.
Evelyn's car had been recovered badly damaged.
The official evidence inventory never mentioned a dash camera.
"How do you know?"
"Charles told me."
"Where is it?"
"Victor took the memory card after the crash."
Jonathan's mouth went dry.
"What does it show?"
"Charles doesn't know."
"Then why does it matter?"
"Because Evelyn called someone while she was driving."
Celeste paused.
"The audio kept recording after the call ended."
Jonathan felt the past pulling open beneath him.
"Who did she call?"
Celeste whispered the answer.
"Maria."
Jonathan looked at Maria.
Her face went blank.
Celeste continued.
"Ask her what Evelyn said six minutes before she crashed."
The call ended.
Every eye in the room turned toward Maria.
She sat down slowly.
May you like
Jonathan could see that this time, she did know the secret.
And she had carried it for four years.
