CHAPTER 3: Daniel Already Knew

The front doors opened once more.

Daniel Caldwell walked into the lobby.

He stopped only long enough to take in the scene—the frightened employees, the silent guests, Vanessa standing pale as paper, and his mother calmly waiting near the reception desk.

He sighed.

"So," he said quietly, "it finally happened."

Vanessa rushed toward him.

"Daniel, your mother tricked me! She came dressed like—"

He raised his hand.

"Enough."

She froze.

Daniel turned to Eleanor first.

"Mother... are you alright?"

She smiled gently.

"I'm perfectly fine."

Only then did he face Vanessa.

"I warned you months ago."

Vanessa stared.

"What are you talking about?"

"I told you that the way you treat people matters more than how you treat me."

Her heartbeat quickened.

"You always spoke kindly to investors."

"You smiled at wealthy guests."

"You flattered executives."

"But every waiter, every cleaner, every doorman... you treated them as if they were invisible."

Vanessa tried to interrupt.

"I was just—"

"No."

Daniel's voice remained calm, making it even more painful.

"I already knew exactly what you would do if you believed someone was poor."

Tears formed in her eyes.

"You... planned this?"

"I didn't."

He looked toward his mother.

"She wanted to know whether my future wife loved our family... or our fortune."

Eleanor answered quietly.

May you like

"Now I have my answer."
