Chapter 4 — A Different Kind of Offer

Chapter 4 — A Different Kind of Offer

The following Monday, Clara returned to Whitmore Capital expecting a hiring decision.

Instead, Ethan invited her into his office overlooking Lake Michigan.

He handed her an envelope.

Inside was an offer letter.

Then she noticed something unusual.

The salary wasn't $58,000.

It was $72,000.

She looked up in confusion.

"I think this is a mistake."

"It isn't."

"But the position was advertised—"

"I know."

She continued reading.

There was another surprise.

A mentorship program.

Executive training.

Leadership development.

"Mr. Whitmore..."

"Ethan."

"I haven't earned this."

He smiled.

"You earned it before you walked into this building."

She looked genuinely puzzled.

"You didn't hire someone who rescued my daughter."

He paused.

"I hired someone who proved she makes difficult decisions when nobody is watching."

He folded his hands.

"I can teach financial modeling."

"I can teach investment strategy."

"I cannot teach character."

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know what to say."

"Say yes."

She laughed through her tears.

"Yes."

Lily burst into the office holding another butterfly sticker.

"I told Daddy you'd come back!"

She hugged Clara tightly.

"You work with us now!"

May you like

Clara hugged her back.

"I guess I do."
