Chapter 3 — One Candidate, One Conversation

Chapter 3 — One Candidate, One Conversation
Forty-five minutes later, Clara stepped into the gleaming lobby of Whitmore Capital.
Employees whispered as Ethan personally escorted her inside.
No one had ever seen the CEO bring an interview candidate through the executive entrance.
Human Resources hurried over.
"Mr. Whitmore, we already marked Ms. Bennett as absent."
"I know."
"The position has moved to the next round."
"I know."
"The hiring policy—"
Ethan calmly interrupted.
"Then perhaps the policy needs reviewing."
The lobby became silent.
Inside the executive conference room, Clara finally sat across from Ethan.
No interview panel.
No rehearsed questions.
Just two cups of coffee.
He opened her résumé.
"I've already read this."
"You have?"
"I read every finalist myself."
He glanced up.
"Graduated first in your finance program."
"Yes."
"Worked evenings at a grocery store."
"To pay tuition."
"Cared for your mother after chemotherapy."
Clara looked surprised.
"I didn't think anyone actually read that section."
"I did."
He leaned back.
"But résumés don't tell me who someone becomes under pressure."
He smiled slightly.
"This morning did."
For the next hour, they talked.
Not only about finance.
About responsibility.
Leadership.
Failure.
Trust.
When Ethan asked how she'd handle managing millions of dollars, Clara answered without hesitation.
"The money isn't mine."
He nodded.
"So?"
"So every dollar belongs to someone who worked hard for it. My job would be protecting their future—not building my ego."
He wrote nothing down.
He didn't need to.
He already knew.
When the conversation ended, Ethan stood.
"I've interviewed thousands of candidates."
Clara waited.
"Most tell me they're honest."
May you like
He smiled.
"You showed me."
