Chapter 9 - The Doctor at the Gate.

Ethan did not open the gate.

He called Detective Ruiz.

Then he watched Celeste and Dr. Kell through the security monitor while Sophie remained upstairs with Maria.

Celeste stood beneath a gray sky in a dark coat.

She looked exhausted.

Kell looked worse.

He kept glancing toward the road as though he expected another car to appear.

Ruiz arrived with Officer Keene twelve minutes later.

Only then did Ethan allow the outer gate to open.

Celeste did not walk toward the house.

She stayed beside the guard station.

"I am not here to fight with you," she said when Ethan approached.

"That would make one of us."

Ruiz stepped between them emotionally, if not physically.

"Mrs. Cole, why are you here?"

Ruiz asked Celeste whether she had ever intended to tell Ethan the truth before the airport.

She stared through the gate at the mansion.

"Three times."

"When?"

"Once before the wedding."

"Once after Sophie started calling me her bonus mom."

Her voice caught.

"And yesterday morning."

Ethan's face hardened.

"What stopped you?"

"The first time, cowardice."

"The second time, I told myself I could fix it without destroying you."

"And yesterday?"

Celeste looked at Richard's absent place beside her as if he were still there.

"Yesterday he showed me the packet he had already sent to your board."

"He said if I changed the plan, he would make sure you believed I created everything."

Ethan said nothing.

Celeste continued.

"I had spent so long helping him build that version that I knew you probably would believe it."

That was the cruelty of complicity.

By the time Celeste wanted the truth, she had already made herself look exactly like the lie Richard needed.

Celeste looked at Kell.

"Because Martin is ready to tell you what Richard made him sign."

Kell swallowed.

"I already spoke to police."

Celeste turned on him.

"You gave them half the truth."

Kell's face flushed.

Ruiz raised a hand.

"Then we can finish the conversation at the station."

Kell shook his head.

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because Richard has someone watching the station."

Ruiz's expression did not change.

"That is a serious claim."

"I know."

Kell looked at Ethan.

"He paid me to produce an evaluation saying you had severe cognitive impairment from prolonged insomnia and medication misuse."

Ethan's hands curled into fists.

"I do not misuse medication."

"I know."

"You signed it anyway."

Kell looked down.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Money."

The honesty was so ugly it almost sounded clean.

Kell continued.

"And because Richard had records of debts I did not want exposed."

Ruiz spoke.

"Gambling?"

Kell nodded.

"He said the certification would only be used for a private trust dispute."

"You knew it was false."

"Yes."

Ethan took one step toward him.

Ruiz put an arm out.

Ethan stopped.

Sophie needed him free, not righteous and arrested.

Celeste watched him carefully.

"There is more."

Ethan looked at her.

"There always is."

Celeste flinched.

"Richard did not plan to keep Sophie in Geneva permanently."

"That is supposed to comfort me?"

"No."

"Then say what you came to say."

Celeste's voice dropped.

"He needed her there for seventy-two hours."

Nora, who had joined them near the gate, frowned.

"Why seventy-two?"

Celeste looked at her.

"Because the Swiss custodian required in-person identity confirmation before activating the foreign sub-account."

Nora shook her head.

"That still would not move trust assets if the underlying trustee change was challenged."

"Richard did not care about moving the trust assets first."

"Then what did he care about?"

Celeste hesitated.

"The audit file."

Ethan remembered the recording.

Frozen is better than audited.

"Explain."

Celeste took a breath.

"Amelia tied the Geneva compliance flag to an automatic forensic audit."

"If a suspicious request was submitted and then completed in person, the bank would open a sealed compliance file Amelia deposited there."

Nora stared at her.

"Richard thought the file contained the original ledger."

"Yes."

"So he wanted Sophie in Geneva because her identity was the trigger."

"Yes."

Ethan felt sick.

His daughter had not been the destination.

She had been the key card.

"And after he got the file?"

Celeste's eyes dropped.

"He said Sophie would come home."

"You believed him?"

"I wanted to."

"That is not an answer."

"No."

She looked directly at Ethan.

"I stopped believing him yesterday morning."

"Yet you still had her passport and ticket."

"Because I was trying to control how it happened."

Ethan laughed without humor.

"You put a terrified child inside a suitcase."

"I told her to hide because Richard came upstairs early."

"And the lock?"

Celeste's voice broke.

"I closed the lid."

The admission hung between them.

"I did not realize the external latch had caught until I heard you downstairs."

Sophie had said Celeste told her it was a game.

That might have been true.

It did not make it acceptable.

Ethan's voice went flat.

"You do not get to turn a six-year-old into evidence that you were secretly protecting her."

Celeste closed her eyes.

"I know."

"Do you?"

"Yes."

"Then why did you not open the suitcase when you heard her calling?"

Celeste looked toward the mansion.

"Because Richard was with me."

"That is cowardice, not protection."

She nodded once.

"I know that too."

Kell shifted nervously.

Ruiz turned to him.

"You said Richard has someone watching the station."

Kell nodded.

"A private investigator named Owen Pike."

Nora frowned.

"I know that name."

"From where?"

"He did litigation support for Richard years ago."

Ruiz took out his phone.

"Description?"

Kell gave one.

Ruiz sent it to another officer.

Then Celeste stepped closer to Nora.

"You found Amelia's real amendment, didn't you?"

Nora did not answer.

Celeste gave a bitter smile.

"That means you opened the archive box."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"How do you know about that?"

"Amelia told me she hid something inside Nora's annual foundation records."

"When?"

"Before she died."

"Why would Amelia tell you anything?"

Celeste looked away.

"Because for a while I was helping her."

Ethan stepped closer.

"And then you married me."

Celeste finally met his eyes.

"Richard told me the original ledger was still in the house."

"So you married me to search for it."

"At first."

The words were barely audible.

Ethan felt something inside him go cold.

"At first?"

Celeste's eyes filled.

"I did not expect to care about you."

"Do not."

"Ethan."

"Do not use feelings to make fraud sound complicated."

She stopped.

Ruiz's phone rang.

He answered and listened.

His expression sharpened.

"Where?"

A pause.

"Do not approach him alone."

He ended the call.

"Owen Pike was seen leaving Richard Hale's property twenty minutes ago."

Ethan frowned.

"So Richard is home?"

Ruiz shook his head.

"No."

"Then where is he?"

Ruiz looked at Nora.

"A traffic camera picked up his car heading toward Greenwich."

May you like

Ethan and Nora understood at the same time.

St. Matthew's Church.
