Chapter 8 - The Company With Amelia's Name.

The company was called Northstar Advisory LLC.
Amelia had formed it eleven years earlier for consulting work she performed before Sophie's birth.
According to state records, the company had been dissolved four years before Amelia died.
According to Dr. Kell's bank statement, Northstar had paid him twenty-five thousand dollars three weeks ago.
That should have been impossible.
Nora spent the next morning reconstructing the company's history.
Ethan stayed at home with Sophie while investigators moved around the edges of his life.
He refused to send her to school.
Not because he thought the school was unsafe.
Because Sophie woke every twenty minutes during the night to check whether he was still there.
At breakfast, she carried Amelia's photograph in the front pocket of her pajamas.
"Are the police going to take Celeste away?"
Ethan chose his answer carefully.
"The police are going to figure out what happened."
"But she lied."
"Yes."
"And Richard lied."
"Yes."
Sophie stirred her cereal.
"Do grown-ups get in trouble for lying?"
Ethan almost smiled.
"Not often enough."
Maria gave him a look from across the kitchen.
He corrected himself.
"Sometimes lies have serious consequences."
Sophie seemed satisfied with that.
Then she asked the question he feared.
"Did Celeste ever love us?"
Ethan did not know how to answer without lying himself.
"I think some people can care about you and still make choices that are selfish and wrong."
"That's confusing."
"It is."
"I don't like confusing people."
"Neither do I."
His phone rang.
Nora.
He stepped into the pantry but left the door open so Sophie could see him.
"Northstar was revived eighteen months ago," Nora said.
"By who?"
"Someone filed reinstatement documents using Amelia's old tax identification number."
"Amelia was dead."
"Exactly."
"Signature?"
"Electronic."
"Richard?"
"Maybe."
"Celeste?"
"Maybe."
Ethan rubbed his forehead.
"I am beginning to hate that word."
"Get comfortable with it."
Nora continued.
"The company's mailing address was changed to a virtual office in White Plains."
"And the bank account?"
"Opened with documents that appear to include Amelia's old passport scan and a forged manager authorization."
"Who is manager?"
"Celeste Mercer."
Ethan went still.
"So Celeste was using a dead woman's company."
"On paper, yes."
"To pay a doctor to declare me incapacitated."
"That is what the transaction suggests."
Ethan looked through the open pantry door at Sophie.
She was arranging cereal pieces into a smiley face.
He lowered his voice.
"Then Celeste cannot claim Richard did everything."
"No."
"Good."
Nora was silent for a beat.
"Do not let wanting her punished make you careless about why she did it."
"I do not care why she did it."
"You will if the why leads to evidence."
Ethan hated that she was right.
An hour later, Ruiz called to say Celeste had requested an interview through her attorney.
She wanted immunity.
Ruiz had not offered it.
"What does she want to trade?"
Ethan asked.
"She says she knows where Amelia's original ledger is."
Ethan almost laughed.
"Amelia said Celeste did not know."
"Four years have passed."
"So Celeste figured it out?"
"Maybe."
Ethan groaned.
Ruiz ignored him.
"She also says Richard plans to leave the country tonight."
"He surrendered his passport."
"People who create false passports sometimes own more than one."
That sentence landed badly.
Ethan thought about Sophie's fake passport.
"Where is Richard now?"
"His attorney says he is at home."
"Do you believe him?"
"I believe he said it."
"That is not what I asked."
"Exactly."
Ruiz ended the call.
Ethan returned to the kitchen.
Sophie had finished breakfast and was drawing.
The picture showed the mansion with four stick figures in front of it.
Ethan recognized himself and Sophie.
He recognized Maria by the enormous hair Sophie always gave her.
The fourth figure was Amelia, drawn beneath a yellow circle in the sky.
There was no Celeste.
Ethan sat beside her.
"What are you drawing?"
"Home."
The answer hurt more than he expected.
Before Nora opened the archive package, Ethan received a formal notice from Cole Development's board chair requesting a temporary meeting.
Rumors had already reached the company.
Someone had leaked that Ethan was under a medical incapacity review.
The rumor did not mention that the review was fraudulent.
Ethan stared at the email.
"Richard is still building the story."
Nora read it.
"Or the story is moving on momentum he created weeks ago."
"Same result."
"Different proof."
Ethan called the board chair with Nora present.
He did not disclose details of the investigation.
He did state clearly that no legitimate physician had declared him incompetent and that counsel would provide documentation.
The chair sounded relieved and embarrassed.
"We received a packet yesterday."
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"From whom?"
"It appeared to come from your personal medical representative."
"I don't have one."
Silence.
"Then I think we have a problem."
"Send the packet to Nora and preserve the email exactly as received."
After the call, Nora looked at him.
"Good."
"You keep grading me."
"You keep needing it."
The packet arrived ten minutes later.
It included Dr. Kell's false certification and a cover letter stating Ethan was temporarily stepping away from fiduciary responsibilities due to a serious sleep-related cognitive condition.
The signature at the bottom looked like Ethan's.
It was not.
Ethan studied the forgery.
"They were going to remove me from my company and Sophie's trust on the same day."
Nora nodded.
"And if you were publicly searching for Sophie at the same time, every emotional reaction could be framed as deterioration."
Ethan felt physically ill.
The plan was not simply financial.
It was narrative control.
Richard intended to decide what every institution believed before Ethan understood there was a story being told about him.
That was when Ethan stopped thinking of the case as a collection of crimes.
It was an attempted replacement of reality.
Sophie would become Sophie Ward.
Ethan would become an incapacitated trustee.
Celeste would become a concerned spouse.
Richard would become the responsible professional stepping in to stabilize chaos.
Every role had been assigned in advance.
Only the suitcase opening early had ruined the casting.
That morning, Maria found Sophie sitting on the floor outside Amelia's room.
She was not crying.
She was simply looking at the closed door.
Ethan sat beside her.
"Want to go in?"
Sophie shook her head.
"Not yet."
"Okay."
They sat without speaking.
After a minute Sophie asked, "Is it still Mom's room if Celeste put her stuff there?"
Ethan looked at the door.
"Rooms don't decide who people are."
"What does that mean?"
"It means Celeste moving things doesn't erase Mom."
Sophie considered that.
"Can we put Mom's pictures back?"
"Yes."
"Not today."
"Not today."
Ethan realized Sophie was doing something many adults around her had failed to do.
She was choosing the pace at which she faced what happened.
He promised himself he would not turn the room into another battlefield between the living and the dead.
At noon, Nora arrived with a banker box from her firm's offsite archive.
She placed it on Ethan's dining table.
"Mercer Foundation annual package."
"The one Amelia mentioned?"
"Yes."
They cut the old archive seal.
Inside were tax records, grant summaries, board minutes, and one sealed envelope addressed to Nora in Amelia's handwriting.
Nora stared at it for several seconds.
"I cannot believe this sat in storage for four years."
"Open it."
She did.
Inside was the authentic trust amendment.
It removed Richard Hale as successor trustee.
It named Nora Bennett instead.
There was also a handwritten cover letter.
Nora read aloud.
"Nora, if this package is opened because Ethan is in trouble, please forgive me for making you part of a contingency plan without asking."
Nora laughed through sudden tears.
"That is very Amelia."
She continued.
"Richard has access to documents he should never control."
"Celeste Ward may eventually try to help him or betray him."
"Either way, she must not become Sophie's guardian."
Ethan felt his chest tighten.
The final line was underlined twice.
Nora read it slowly.
"The original ledger is not in Switzerland."
"It is in the one place Richard would never voluntarily search."
Ethan stared at the paper.
"What place?"
Nora turned the letter over.
There was nothing else.
Then Sophie walked into the dining room.
She looked at the open archive box.
"Mom had a box like that."
Ethan turned.
"Where?"
"At church."
Nora's eyes narrowed.
"What church?"
"The little one where we put flowers for Grandma."
Ethan knew exactly which one.
St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Greenwich.
Amelia's mother was buried in the churchyard.
Richard hated churches.
He had skipped Amelia's memorial service there and claimed a migraine.
Ethan looked at Nora.
"The one place Richard would never voluntarily search."
Sophie tilted her head.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
Before Ethan could answer, the mansion's front gate intercom buzzed.
Maria checked the screen.
Her expression tightened.
"Mr. Cole, there is a woman outside asking for you."
"Who?"
Maria read the name from the security display.
"Celeste."
Ethan stood.
Maria shook her head.
"She's not alone."
May you like
The second person stepped into camera range.
It was Dr. Martin Kell.
