Chapter 2: The Silent Witness

Dr. Richard Vance did not look like a man who had just run up three flights of stairs. At fifty-five, the Chief Medical Director of St. Jude’s Elite Care was a man of intimidating presence, sharp intellect, and zero tolerance for nonsense. He was also Khloe Thorne’s maternal uncle.
Richard burst into the room, followed immediately by a rapid-response trauma team. He took in the scene with clinical precision: the shattered glass, the blood on the floor, the weeping woman in red, and the billionaire kneeling in the center of the chaos.
“Move!” Richard barked at Marcus, his voice echoing like a gunshot in the suite.
Marcus didn’t argue. He scrambled backward, his hands stained with his wife’s blood. “Richard, I don’t know what happened, she fell, she—”
“I said move, Marcus!” Richard snapped, dropping to his knees beside his niece. The trauma team swarmed Khloe instantly. A nurse slapped an oxygen mask over her face while another quickly took her vitals.
“Fetal heart rate is dropping, Dr. Vance,” a nurse reported urgently, her eyes glued to the portable monitor. “We have placental abruption. BP is tanking.”
“Get her on the gurney. We’re going to the OR right now. Prep for an emergency C-section!” Richard commanded. He looked at Khloe’s pale, lifeless face, his jaw tightening into a furious line. He noticed the distinct, bruising indention on her side—a mark that looked entirely inconsistent with a simple fall against a table.
As the medical team lifted Khloe onto the stretcher and rushed her out of the room, Marcus tried to follow them.
“Marcus, wait!” Isabella cried out, grabbing his arm. “Don’t leave me here! I’m traumatized, I need to give my statement—”
Richard Vance stopped in the doorway. He turned slowly, his eyes locking onto Isabella Rossi. He had never liked the socialite. He had seen the way she hovered around Marcus at charity events, operating with the stealth and venom of a viper.
“You aren’t going anywhere, Ms. Rossi,” Richard said, his voice dropping to a dangerously quiet register.
“Excuse me?” Isabella lifted her chin, falling back on her default arrogance. “I am the victim here. Your crazy niece attacked me. Look at my dress! Look at my arm! She came at me with broken glass!”
Marcus ran a hand through his hair, looking torn, desperate, and utterly broken. “Richard, Isabella says Khloe attacked her. We need to figure out—”
“Are you out of your mind, Marcus?” Richard interrupted, staring at the billionaire with absolute disgust. “You’ve let this parasite inject herself into your life for months, and now you’re going to take her word over your pregnant wife lying in a pool of her own blood?”
“I’m just telling you what she said!” Marcus yelled, his composure completely shattering. “I just walked in! I don’t know what happened!”
“But I do,” Richard said coldly.
Isabella’s breath hitched. For the first time that night, the smug confidence in her eyes wavered. “What are you talking about? It’s her word against mine.”
Richard pulled a sleek, black tablet from his lab coat pocket. “This hospital was renovated last year, Marcus. When you donated ten million dollars for the new VIP maternity wing, you insisted on state-of-the-art security to protect your family from paparazzi.”
Isabella took a step backward, her face draining of color.
“You wanted total privacy,” Richard continued, tapping the screen of the tablet. “But as Chief Director, I authorized hidden, motion-activated cameras in the VIP suites for liability purposes. High-definition. Night-vision capable. With audio.”
Isabella felt the floor drop out from underneath her. Hidden cameras? Audio? No. That was impossible. She had checked the ceiling. She had checked the corners. There were no cameras!
“I got the security alert on my phone the moment the first glass shattered,” Richard said, holding up the tablet. “I watched the whole thing while I was running up the stairs.”
He pressed play.
The audio filled the quiet room, crisp and undeniable.
“You were supposed to know your place. Smile for the cameras. Give him an heir. Then disappear.”
Marcus froze. That was Isabella’s voice. But it wasn’t the sweet, syrupy tone she used around him. It was dripping with pure, unadulterated malice.
On the screen, Marcus watched in real-time as Isabella lunged forward, shoving his pregnant wife into the marble table. He watched Khloe fall. And then, he watched the horrific, brutal moment when Isabella lifted her stiletto heel and kicked Khloe squarely in the stomach.
The silence that followed the video was deafening.

Marcus slowly raised his eyes from the tablet. He turned to look at Isabella. The confusion in his eyes was gone. In its place was a darkness so terrifying, so absolute, that Isabella instinctively scrambled backward until her back hit the wall.
“Marcus…” she whispered, her voice trembling—this time, for real. “It’s… it’s out of context… I can explain…”
