Chapter 1: The Bleeding Truth

The silence in the luxury hospital suite was absolute, heavy, and suffocating. It was the kind of quiet that follows a car crash before the sirens begin to wail.
Khloe lay on the freezing marble floor, her arms wrapped protectively around her swollen abdomen. The pain was blinding—a sharp, jagged heat radiating from her side where Isabella’s stiletto had made impact, spiraling deep into her womb. Every breath she took tasted like copper and fear. She tried to speak, to scream, to tell her husband what had just happened, but her vocal cords refused to cooperate. All that escaped her lips was a wet, ragged gasp.
In the doorway, Marcus Thorne stood paralyzed. The billionaire was usually a man of immediate action, a titan of industry who commanded boardrooms and destroyed rivals with a single phone call. But right now, dressed in his immaculate black tuxedo from the charity gala downstairs, he looked completely disoriented. His piercing gray eyes darted from the shattered crystal champagne glass on the floor to the terrifying sight of his wife crumpled in a heap.
Before Marcus could even process the horror of the scene, Isabella moved.
The transition was terrifyingly flawless. The vicious, cold-blooded predator who had just kicked a pregnant woman transformed instantly into a fragile, terrified victim. Isabella let out a perfectly timed, trembling sob. Tears spilled over her thick lashes, smudging her expensive mascara just enough to look authentic. She stumbled forward, her flawless crimson gown rustling, and threw herself toward Marcus.
“Marcus! Oh my god, Marcus, thank God you’re here!” she cried, her voice cracking with manufactured hysteria. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at Khloe. “She… she lost her mind! I just came up here to check on her, to see if she needed some water because she looked so pale downstairs, and she just snapped!”
Khloe’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. Through the haze of excruciating pain, the audacity of the lie was a physical blow.
“She grabbed the glass!” Isabella wailed, burying her face into Marcus’s shoulder, clinging to his tuxedo jacket like a lifeline. “She said I was trying to ruin her life! She lunged at me, Marcus! I only pushed her away to defend myself. She fell into the table. I didn’t mean to! I swear, I didn’t mean to!”
Behind Marcus, Elaine Parker, the high-profile event coordinator, stood frozen with a clipboard clutched to her chest. Elaine’s mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out.
Marcus looked down at Isabella, his jaw tight, and then looked at Khloe. For one agonizing, suspended second, Khloe saw the hesitation in her husband’s eyes. Isabella had spent the last six months carefully planting seeds of doubt in Marcus’s mind—whispering that Khloe’s pregnancy hormones were making her unstable, that Khloe was paranoid, jealous, and prone to dramatic outbursts. The poison had been administered drop by drop, and now, looking at Marcus’s conflicted expression, Khloe realized the venom had worked.
He didn’t immediately rush to his wife. He didn’t immediately throw Isabella aside.
That one second of hesitation broke something fundamental inside Khloe’s heart. It shattered the last remaining illusion of her marriage.
“Marcus…” Khloe finally managed to whisper, her voice barely a rasp. She pulled her hand away from her white maternity dress.
The fabric was no longer white. A dark, terrifying patch of crimson was blossoming at her side, accompanied by a sudden, horrifying dampness spreading between her legs.
Marcus’s eyes tracked the movement. The moment he saw the blood, the spell broke.
“Khloe!” Marcus roared, shoving Isabella aside with such force that the socialite stumbled and nearly fell into the shattered glass. He dropped to his knees, sliding across the marble floor, his expensive suit trousers soaking up the spilled champagne. “Khloe, look at me. Look at me! Elaine, call for help! Now!”
“I—I already did, Mr. Thorne! I hit the emergency button in the hallway!” Elaine stammered, finally breaking out of her shock.
Isabella staggered to her feet, her eyes flashing with a split-second of raw panic before the mask slammed back into place. “Marcus, you have to believe me! She’s unhinged! She tried to hurt me!”
“Shut up, Isabella!” Marcus barked, his hands hovering over Khloe, terrified to touch her, terrified to make it worse. “Khloe, hold on. Please, baby, hold on.”

But Khloe didn’t look at him. Her vision was blurring, the edges of the room turning dark and fuzzy. Her last conscious thought wasn't about the woman in the red dress, nor was it about the husband who had hesitated. It was about the tiny, fluttery heartbeat inside her that had suddenly gone terrifyingly still.
Just as Khloe’s eyes rolled back, the heavy oak doors of the VIP suite were violently thrown open.
