Report: Iran Approached Nuclear Capability While Engaged in ‘Peace’ Talks

A new report suggests that Iran moved significantly closer to developing nuclear weapons capability while simultaneously participating in diplomatic negotiations intended to ease tensions with the West.

According to officials and intelligence assessments cited in recent reporting, Iranian negotiators were engaged in indirect talks with the United States and other international actors while the country continued advancing key elements of its nuclear program.

The negotiations, which took place in early 2026 and were mediated in part through regional partners such as Oman, were aimed at preventing further escalation and potentially reaching a long-term agreement over Iran’s nuclear activities.

However, concerns intensified when information surfaced indicating that Iran had accumulated large quantities of highly enriched uranium during this same period.

Reports revealed that Iranian officials acknowledged possessing approximately 460 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent purity, a level far above what is typically required for civilian nuclear energy.

Analysts note that uranium enriched to 90 percent is generally considered weapons-grade, meaning that 60 percent enrichment puts a country within relatively quick reach of producing a nuclear weapon.

Experts warn that once uranium reaches the 60 percent threshold, the additional enrichment required to reach weapons-grade levels can occur rapidly.

Some estimates suggest the final step could take as little as a week if a country already possesses the necessary infrastructure and materials.
