Chapter 15 - Friday Morning.

Friday arrived with rain.
Emma woke at five-thirty to the sound of water against the bedroom windows and Daniel already sitting on the edge of the bed.
He had not slept much.
Neither had she.
The retirement meeting was scheduled for eleven at the Carter Grand.
By seven, lawyers, auditors, and two outside investigators were already working from conference rooms on separate floors.
Aaron had arranged everything quietly.
The plan was simple enough to describe and difficult enough to make Emma nervous.
Henry would proceed with the retirement announcement.
Gregory would believe the Mercer conversion was about to trigger.
The board would then wait to see what solution he proposed.
At the same time, the bank would preserve North Harbor and Wells Capital records.
Outside counsel would secure company servers.
No one would accuse Gregory until documents were protected.
Daniel hated every part of it.
"We are giving him a room full of opportunities," he said while knotting his tie.
Emma sat at the vanity and pinned one side of her hair back.
"We are giving him the opportunity he already expects."
"That is not comforting."
"It wasn't meant to be."
He looked at her in the mirror.
She wore a simple navy maternity dress and low shoes.
Nothing about her appearance invited attention.
That was deliberate.
She did not want to look like a symbol.
She wanted to look like herself.
Daniel walked over.
"You do not have to go."
Emma turned.
"Yes, I do."
"For the record, I knew you were going to say that."
"Good. You're learning."
He crouched in front of her and placed his hands over hers.
"If anything feels wrong, we leave."
"Agreed."
"Even if Henry is in the middle of a speech."
"Agreed."
"Even if Victoria objects."
Emma raised an eyebrow.
"That part would make leaving easier."
He smiled.
Then his expression grew serious.
"I am sorry I did not tell you about the night before our wedding."
Emma did not look away.
"I know."
"That is not the same as forgiveness."
"No."
"I know that too."
She squeezed his hand.
"We will deal with us after we finish dealing with all of them."
"That may take years."
"Then start budgeting."
At eight-thirty, they arrived through the Carter Grand's underground entrance.
The hotel staff had been told a private board event was taking place.
Media gathered outside because Henry's retirement had leaked overnight.
Gregory arrived at nine-ten.
He smiled at cameras and offered no comment.
Inside, he greeted Henry with a handshake.
Emma watched from a side corridor through a small security monitor.
Gregory looked completely calm.
He hugged Victoria.
He nodded respectfully to Margaret.
He even asked a staff member whether Daniel had arrived yet.
"He is good," Emma said.
Aaron stood beside her.
"At what?"
"Looking like the person who belongs in charge."
Aaron nodded.
"That is how he built his career."
At nine-thirty, Caroline arrived with Claire.
Neither would attend the first part of the board meeting.
They waited with outside counsel in another suite.
Nathan arrived at ten.
Victoria had not expected him.
Emma saw their first encounter near the elevators.
They stood six feet apart like strangers who remembered being married.
Nathan spoke first.
"Where's Sophie?"
"With my friend Julia."
"Good."
Victoria folded her arms.
"Why are you here?"
"Because North Harbor is still legally tied to me, and my attorney suggested I stop letting your family explain my life without me."
Victoria's expression tightened.
"Fair."
Nathan looked surprised by the answer.
Emma was too.
At ten-fifteen, Aaron received confirmation that the bank had preserved the relevant transfer records.
At ten-twenty, outside counsel secured a forensic copy of Gregory's company email and executive drive under a board-authorized compliance review Henry had quietly signed the night before.
At ten-thirty, the investigators reported something unexpected.
Gregory had attempted to access North Harbor payment records at 6:04 that morning.
His credentials were denied because the files had been locked for review.
Five minutes later, someone from his home network logged into Wells Capital's account portal.
"He knows something," Daniel said.
Aaron agreed.
"Maybe not what."
At ten-forty, Gregory texted Victoria.
Are we aligned?
She showed the message to everyone in the side room.
Henry looked at his daughter.
"What does he think you're aligned on?"
Victoria swallowed.
"Removing Daniel after the announcement if he challenges the transition."
Daniel stared at her.
"You left that part out."
"I forgot."
"You forgot a second plan to remove me?"
"It has been a busy week."
Emma almost laughed despite herself.
Victoria typed the reply Aaron suggested.
Yes. As discussed.
Gregory responded with a thumbs-up.
Then another message.
Once Henry announces, do not let Aaron delay the vote.
Henry's expression went cold.
"He expects the vote today."
Emma stepped into a small restroom before the meeting and stared at herself in the mirror.
She looked tired.
Not cinematic tired.
Real tired.
There were faint shadows under her eyes, and one side of her hair had already escaped its pin.
For a moment she wished she could simply go home.
Nobody would have blamed her.
Then her phone buzzed with a message from Maya.
You do not have to prove anything by staying in that room.
Emma smiled.
Her best friend knew her too well.
She typed back.
I'm not staying to prove I'm strong. I'm staying because they keep making decisions about me in rooms I'm asked to leave.
Maya replied immediately.
That is a much better reason. Eat something.
Emma looked at the granola bar Daniel had placed in her purse.
She laughed quietly and opened it.
When she returned to the corridor, Daniel was waiting.
"You okay?"
"Yes."
"That was too fast. Real answer."
Emma considered it.
"I want this over."
"Me too."
"But I don't want the ending to be another family agreement nobody else can see."
Daniel nodded.
"Then today goes on the record."
Emma took his hand.
Together they walked into the room where Gregory Wells was already arranging the next version of the story.
At ten-fifty-five, board members began entering the main ballroom conference suite.
The room had been arranged with a long table, bottled water, folders, and a podium near the windows.
No press.
No guests.
Only directors, counsel, and family shareholders.
Emma took a seat along the wall rather than at the table.
Gregory noticed her immediately.
His smile tightened.
He walked over.
"Emma."
"Gregory."
"I was under the impression this would be a closed governance session."
Henry answered from behind him.
"She is my guest."
Gregory turned smoothly.
"Of course."
Daniel watched from the other side of the room.
Gregory lowered his voice to Emma.
"This week cannot have been easy."
"It has been educational."
His eyes sharpened.
"In what way?"
Emma smiled politely.
"I've learned a lot about consulting vendors."
For the first time, Gregory's expression flickered.
Barely.
Then he smiled again.
"Always good to stay curious."
He walked away.
Emma felt her heartbeat in her throat.
Daniel approached.
"Was that necessary?"
"Probably not."
"You enjoyed it."
"A little."
At eleven exactly, Henry called the meeting to order.
He did not use the prepared speech.
He stood at the head of the table and looked at the people who had spent years building the company with him.
"Forty-two years ago, I opened a hotel with more debt than sense and a wife who somehow believed I could make it work."
Margaret looked down.
Henry continued.
"Today I intend to step down as chief executive."
The room remained silent.
Everyone knew the announcement was coming.
Hearing it still changed something.
Henry described the transition plan.
Operational leadership would be shared temporarily while the board selected a permanent CEO.
Voting trust points would release according to existing agreements.
He did not name Victoria.
He did not name Daniel.
Gregory shifted slightly.
Henry finished.
"My retirement is effective at the close of today's meeting."
Aaron checked his watch.
The trigger had occurred.
Across town, Caroline's counsel filed a formal notice preserving the Mercer trust's conversion rights without exercising them yet.
Gregory did not know that last part.
He believed the shares were about to convert.
He raised his hand.
"Henry, before we move to transition matters, I think the board must address the unresolved conduct issue involving Daniel."
Daniel sat very still.
Victoria looked at Gregory.
"Now?"
Gregory seemed surprised by her hesitation.
"This is the appropriate time."
He distributed a prepared motion.
Thirty-day suspension.
Temporary reassignment of Daniel's transition votes.
Emma saw Susan Patel's eyebrows lift.
"This is dated yesterday," Susan said.
Gregory nodded.
"Prepared in anticipation of today's governance needs."
Aaron leaned back.
"Interesting."
Gregory looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because yesterday you told me you only wanted clarification about whether the retirement was happening."
Gregory did not miss a beat.
"Circumstances evolve."
Victoria stared at the motion.
Then she pushed it away.
"I am not sponsoring this."
Gregory's expression finally broke.
"Excuse me?"
"My name is listed as sponsor. Remove it."
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at his sister.
Victoria's face was pale but steady.
"I am withdrawing my request to suspend Daniel."
Gregory leaned toward her.
"Victoria, we discussed this."
"Yes. We did."
She looked around the room.
"And I should have disclosed those discussions earlier."
Gregory's jaw tightened.
The control he had carried into the room began to slip.
"This is highly irregular."
Susan Patel spoke calmly.
"So is presenting a motion under a director's name after she withdraws support."
Gregory sat back.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
Henry folded his hands.
"Anything else on your schedule, Gregory?"
The word schedule landed deliberately.
Gregory looked at him.
Then at Aaron.
Then at Emma.
His eyes stayed on her for half a second too long.
He knew.
Emma felt it.
Aaron felt it too.
Gregory closed the folder in front of him.
"Actually, yes."
He stood.
"There is one more matter the board deserves to know before Henry's retirement becomes final."
Henry's eyes narrowed.
Gregory reached into his briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.
"A week ago, I received evidence that a member of the Carter family has been secretly negotiating to sell a controlling interest in this company."
Every face in the room changed.
Daniel leaned forward.
"Who?"
May you like
Gregory looked directly at Emma.
"Your wife."
