Chapter 14 - Everything on Schedule.

Aaron ended the call with Gregory and immediately wrote down the exact time.

Emma had already started taking notes.

"He said 'everything on schedule,'" she said.

"Not 'the retirement.'"

Daniel nodded.

"He sounded relieved."

Victoria paced once across the room.

"I told Gregory about the suspension plan three weeks ago."

Henry looked at her.

"You told me you came up with it after lunch."

"I told you I filed it after lunch."

"Do not play word games."

Victoria rubbed her forehead.

"I was trying to protect my position. I knew Friday mattered. I asked Gregory what would happen if Daniel was unavailable during transition."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Unavailable."

"I did not say dead, if that is what your face is implying."

"I was not implying that."

"Your face was."

Emma cut in.

"What exactly did Gregory tell you?"

Victoria sat.

"He said the executive conduct clause allowed temporary reassignment if a director was suspended for reputational or legal review."

"And thirty days?"

"His suggestion."

"Did he tell you to create a public incident?"

Victoria looked at Emma.

Shame crossed her face.

"No. That part was mine."

The answer mattered.

Gregory might have helped shape the mechanism, but Victoria still owned her choice.

Emma appreciated the distinction even if she did not forgive it.

Aaron contacted the compliance officer at the trust bank.

He shared the questionable amendment and requested an urgent review of the destination account.

The compliance officer promised a response within two hours.

No one liked waiting.

Henry left to make calls from another office.

Margaret sat by herself near the window.

Daniel and Victoria stopped arguing because they had run out of energy.

Emma walked slowly to the hallway for water.

Victoria followed.

"Can I ask you something?"

Emma turned.

"You just did."

Victoria almost smiled.

"Why are you still here?"

Emma frowned.

"Where would I go?"

"Home. Away from us. Somewhere normal."

Emma filled a paper cup.

"Daniel is my husband."

"That has not exactly protected you from this family."

Emma looked at her.

"Marriage is not a shield."

Victoria's expression shifted.

"No."

She leaned against the wall.

"Nathan and I forgot that a long time ago."

Emma said nothing.

Victoria continued anyway.

She and Nathan had not been happy for nearly two years.

They stayed together partly for Sophie and partly because neither wanted a public separation while Victoria was positioning herself for leadership.

Nathan resented being used as a convenient source of LLCs and investment contacts.

Victoria resented his refusal to take the Carter company seriously.

Their marriage had become two people negotiating around a child they both loved.

"Did he steal the money?" Emma asked.

Victoria looked down.

"I do not know."

"Do you think he could?"

"A week ago I would have said no."

"And now?"

Victoria gave a humorless smile.

"A week ago I also thought my mother was helping me become CEO because she believed in me."

Emma studied her.

"Maybe she did."

Victoria shook her head.

"She believed in the version of me that agreed with her."

That sentence stayed with Emma.

Margaret had done something similar to Daniel.

Protected him when he was easy to protect.

Distrusted him when he made choices she could not control.

Emma wondered whether Margaret had ever learned to love without managing the outcome.

They returned to the conference room.

Daniel was reading his phone.

"The public video was removed from the original account."

Emma sat beside him.

"Why?"

"Account deleted."

Victoria looked up.

"Can we find out who owned it?"

Aaron nodded.

"Possibly, through legal process."

The video had already been copied elsewhere, so deleting it accomplished little publicly.

But the action suggested the uploader was nervous.

Emma remembered that Nathan had recorded the video and sent it to Aaron.

Aaron denied uploading it.

Caroline denied uploading it.

Who else had received it?

"Aaron," Emma said, "when Nathan sent you the recording, did you forward it?"

"To Henry."

Henry looked over from the doorway.

"I did not post it."

"Anyone else?"

Aaron thought.

"I sent a secure copy to outside counsel for preservation."

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

"Brooks & Wells."

The room went quiet.

Wells.

Gregory's younger brother, Thomas Wells, was a partner at the firm.

Aaron immediately saw the problem.

"The file went to their evidence intake system."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Could Gregory access it?"

"Not legally."

"That was not the question."

Aaron opened his laptop and called the firm's managing partner.

Fifteen tense minutes later, they had an answer.

The evidence link had been opened from an IP address associated with the Carter Grand's executive network.

At 11:42 p.m. the night before the video appeared online.

Henry frowned.

"Gregory was at the hotel that night."

"How do you know?" Emma asked.

"He had dinner with two lenders."

Victoria sat back.

"He posted it."

Aaron raised a hand.

"We cannot prove that yet."

Daniel looked at Emma.

"Now I know how you feel every time I jump ahead."

"Annoying, isn't it?"

"Extremely."

The trust bank called sooner than expected.

Aaron put the compliance officer on speaker.

"We traced the investment reserve account referenced in the amendment," she said.

Everyone leaned in.

"It is held through a managed brokerage structure, but we identified the controlling entity."

Aaron asked, "Which entity?"

"Wells Capital Management."

Henry closed his eyes.

Gregory Wells had managed family-office investments before joining Carter Hospitality full-time.

The old firm remained in his name.

The compliance officer continued.

"Approximately two point one million dollars reached that structure over fourteen months."

Victoria looked sick.

"Using my approvals."

"It appears so."

Aaron asked, "Can the bank freeze related transfers?"

"We have placed an internal hold pending review."

Henry's expression changed from shock to fury.

"Call the board."

Aaron shook his head.

"Not yet."

"He stole from my company."

"We have evidence of unauthorized transfers to his entity. We still need to preserve records before he knows we have them."

Margaret spoke for the first time in nearly an hour.

"He also knows about the conversion."

Everyone turned.

She stared at the table.

"Gregory helped me model the repayment schedule last year."

Henry's anger shifted toward her.

"You involved him?"

"He was CFO when the crisis happened. He already knew there was off-book debt."

Emma felt the whole history snap into focus.

Gregory had known about the hidden Mercer obligation since 2017.

Margaret looked at Emma's diagram and then at the transfer records.

"My secrecy protected him."

No one answered immediately.

She looked at Henry.

"Every time someone asked about North Harbor, I stopped the question because I thought I was protecting the Mercer agreement."

Henry's face softened despite everything.

"Yes."

"And Gregory knew I would."

"Probably."

Margaret sat down.

For years she had treated secrecy as competence.

Now she could see how easily it had been used against her.

Emma felt an unexpected flicker of sympathy.

Not forgiveness.

Sympathy.

"Secrets create private hallways," Emma said.

Margaret looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

"People can move things through them because nobody else knows where the doors are."

Aaron nodded.

"That's a good description of what happened here."

Margaret gave Emma a tired look.

"I assume you charge for consulting metaphors."

Emma smiled faintly.

"Only after the baby is born."

For the first time since the conflict began, Margaret almost smiled back.

The moment lasted only a second.

It did not erase anything.

But it proved the two women could occupy the same room without every sentence becoming a contest.

He knew the company could not easily expose North Harbor without exposing its own secret accounting arrangements.

He knew Margaret would resist scrutiny because she feared Henry discovering the full truth.

He knew Victoria wanted control.

He knew Daniel could be provoked through Emma.

He did not need to create the family's weaknesses.

He only needed to arrange them.

"The luncheon," Emma said.

Victoria looked at her.

"What about it?"

"Who suggested inviting board members?"

Victoria frowned.

"Gregory."

Daniel leaned back slowly.

Margaret looked stunned.

Victoria continued.

"I was going to keep it family only. He said if Dad planned to announce retirement, having directors there would make the transition feel unified."

Emma's pulse quickened.

"He wanted witnesses."

"To Daniel reacting," Aaron said.

Henry's face went cold.

"And he had access to the video."

The plan was no longer speculation.

It had a shape.

Gregory encouraged the right people to be in the room.

Victoria created the confrontation.

Daniel reacted.

Gregory gained grounds for suspension.

Victoria would temporarily control Daniel's votes.

The retirement would trigger the Mercer conversion.

In the confusion, Gregory could manipulate the hidden obligation and perhaps use the converted shares or a distressed transaction to protect the money he had redirected.

Emma looked at Aaron.

"What happens if Friday goes forward exactly as planned?"

Aaron thought for a moment.

"Potentially, Gregory expects the conversion notice to create a governance crisis."

"And during that crisis?"

"He may propose a financing solution."

Henry's eyes narrowed.

"Wells Capital."

Aaron nodded.

Gregory could offer to refinance the Mercer obligation through his own investment network.

He could convert hidden theft into legitimate fees or equity.

He could make himself the person who saved the company from a crisis he helped create.

Victoria whispered, "Just like Mom in 2017."

Margaret looked at her sharply.

The irony was brutal.

Gregory had learned the family's favorite language.

Secret rescue.

Hidden leverage.

Control earned through crisis.

Daniel's phone buzzed.

A new email appeared from Gregory.

Subject: TOMORROW.

Daniel opened it.

There was only one sentence.

I think it would be wise for Emma to stay away from the retirement meeting for everyone's sake.

Daniel's face hardened.

Emma took the phone from him.

She read the sentence again.

May you like

Then she looked at Aaron.

"Now we know exactly where I need to be tomorrow."
