CHAPTER 3 — THE LETTER INSIDE

CHAPTER 3 — THE LETTER INSIDE
One silk packet remained unopened.
Professor Harrington hesitated.
"I think..."
"This belongs to you."
My fingers trembled as I unfolded the ancient cloth.
Inside was an envelope.
My name had been written in elegant handwriting.
To My Sweet Amelia...
My knees nearly gave out.
It was my grandmother's handwriting.
Tears blurred my vision.
The letter read:
"If you're reading this, then someone has finally destroyed the dress."
"Good."
"Because only then would the truth be ready."
The room remained completely still.
"Inside these seams are the last surviving records proving our family's true history."
"I hid them where no thief would ever think to look."
"People steal jewels."
"No one steals an old patched dress."
I covered my mouth.
Every patch...
Every stitch...
May you like
Had been protecting history.
Not hiding poverty.
