Chapter 3: The Truth About the Casualty Notice

Two detectives arrived within twenty minutes.

They photographed everything.

The forged casualty notification.

The guardianship documents.

The unopened mail.

The notebook.

The still-warm iron.

Margaret insisted it was all a misunderstanding.

"I was trying to protect my grandchild."

One detective looked down at the evidence.

"By pretending your son was dead?"

She had no answer.

Hours later, another unexpected visitor arrived.

Colonel James Whitaker stepped through the front door.

He saluted Alejandro before turning to Elena.

"Mrs. Castillo, I owe you an apology."

She frowned.

"What for?"

"We've been trying to reach your husband for weeks after he completed a classified assignment."

He looked toward the forged notification.

"This document never came from the Army."

He pointed to the seal.

"The font is wrong."

Then the signature.

"The officer listed here retired three years ago."

The room fell silent.

Margaret had studied genuine military paperwork well enough to fool a grieving family.

But not an experienced officer.

The colonel sighed.

"I've already contacted military investigators."

He looked directly at Margaret.

"Impersonating military communications is a federal offense."

Her confidence disappeared.

For months she had believed no one would question the document.

Now every lie was collapsing.

One after another.

Alejandro slipped his arm around Elena.

"I'm here now."

She leaned into him.

"I thought I'd lost you."

"You never will again."

He rested his hand gently on her stomach.

Their baby kicked.

The first time Alejandro had felt it.

Despite everything that had happened, they both smiled.

It was the first hopeful moment of the day.
