Chapter 3: The Truth Buried for Eight Months

Chapter 3: The Truth Buried for Eight Months

Detectives arrived within twenty minutes.

Military investigators followed shortly after.

The kitchen transformed into a crime scene.

Photographs.

Evidence bags.

Statements.

The forged casualty notice.

The custody documents.

The heated iron.

Every item disappeared into sealed evidence containers.

While officers searched the house, one detective called from upstairs.

"You need to see this."

Alejandro and I followed.

Margaret's home office looked ordinary.

Until they opened the locked filing cabinet.

Inside were three thick binders.

One was labeled:

ELENA CASTILLO

I felt sick.

Every doctor's appointment.

Every prenatal visit.

Copies of my prescriptions.

Photographs of me entering grocery stores.

Bank statements.

Phone records.

Even handwritten notes describing my emotional state after every visit.

"Appeared tired."

"Cried after church."

"Possibly unstable."

"Suitable evidence."

I couldn't breathe.

"She was documenting me..."

The detective nodded.

"For months."

Another folder contained dozens of canceled appointment confirmations.

Every cancellation had come from my email address.

Except...

I had never sent them.

A cybercrime investigator quickly confirmed what happened.

Someone had created an email nearly identical to mine.

One missing period.

One extra letter.

Doctors believed they were speaking with me.

Medical offices updated records.

Appointments disappeared.

Prenatal care became inconsistent.

On paper...

I looked negligent.

Exactly the picture someone would present in family court.

Alejandro slowly closed the binder.

His voice cracked for the first time.

"She wanted them to take our baby."

The detective looked at us.

"Not just custody."

He held up another document.

Emergency petition.

Immediate removal after birth.

Reason:

Mother mentally unfit. Father deceased.

I burst into tears.

Every missed appointment.

Every strange insurance problem.

Every missing letter.

None of it had been an accident.

It had all been engineered.

Margaret hadn't planned this after Alejandro's reported death.

She had planned it before he ever deployed.

She had simply been waiting for an opportunity.

One officer approached quietly.

"Mrs. Castillo..."

He placed handcuffs on Margaret.

"You are under arrest."

She never looked at me.

She only stared at Alejandro.

"I did it for you."

He answered without emotion.

"No."

"You did it to control everyone."

As officers escorted her outside, the neighborhood watched in stunned silence.
