Chapter 2: The File Hidden Beneath the Custody Papers

Chapter 2: The File Hidden Beneath the Custody Papers

Alejandro's fingers stopped on a thin manila folder tucked beneath the forged guardianship documents.

It wasn't labeled with my name.

It was labeled with his.

Captain Alejandro Castillo — Estate Administration.

His eyes hardened.

He opened it.

Inside were copies of military life insurance forms, banking documents, property transfer requests, and a notarized petition declaring him "presumed deceased."

My heart nearly stopped.

"What is that?" I whispered.

Alejandro didn't answer immediately.

He kept turning pages.

Each one made his expression darker.

Someone had already tried to collect his military death benefits.

Someone had already contacted the bank requesting access to our joint accounts.

Someone had even prepared paperwork transferring ownership of our home into Margaret's name as temporary administrator of his estate.

The signatures looked almost perfect.

Almost.

Until Alejandro held one beside a birthday card I had saved from before his deployment.

"They copied my signature," he said quietly.

"But they missed one thing."

He pointed to the final letter.

"I always cross my T from left to right."

The forged signature crossed it the opposite way.

Professional.

But not perfect.

Margaret's breathing became uneven.

"I can explain—"

"No," Alejandro interrupted.

"I think you've been explaining for years."

His phone came out.

He dialed one number.

"This is Captain Alejandro Castillo."

A pause.

"I need Military Criminal Investigation Division and local police at my mother's address immediately."

Margaret lunged forward.

"Alejandro, don't!"

He stepped between us.

"You threatened my pregnant wife with a burning iron."

"You forged federal documents."

"You intercepted medical records."

"You attempted insurance fraud."

His voice never rose.

That frightened Margaret more than if he had screamed.

"You planned my funeral before anyone confirmed I was dead."

The room fell silent again.

Then the back door opened.

Two neighbors stood there.

Mrs. Hernandez and old Mr. Collins.

They had heard shouting.

Mrs. Hernandez looked at the iron still plugged into the wall.

She looked at my tear-stained face.

Then at Alejandro.

"What happened?"

Alejandro answered simply.

"Please stay."

"You may become witnesses."

Margaret's shoulders collapsed.

For the first time in her life...

She realized she wasn't controlling the story anymore.
