Chapter 2 — The Secret No One Was Supposed to Hear
The ballroom fell silent.
Every conversation stopped.
Crystal glasses froze halfway to waiting lips as dozens of wealthy guests watched the little boy cling desperately to the housekeeper.
"Mommy..."
The single whispered word echoed louder than the orchestra.
Emily's entire body trembled.
She wanted to deny it.
She wanted to step away.
But years of pretending vanished the moment she wrapped her arms around him.
Her son.
Her little boy.
Across the room, Logan stood frozen.
His mind rejected what his eyes had just witnessed.
The maid?
His son's mother?
Impossible.
He strode forward, his polished shoes clicking sharply against the marble floor.
The guests instinctively moved aside.
When he finally reached them, the boy refused to let go.
Tiny fingers clutched Emily's apron as though letting go meant losing her forever.
"Daniel," Logan said softly, kneeling beside him. "Look at me."
The boy shook his head.
His voice cracked again.
"I don't want to leave Mommy anymore."
Emily squeezed her eyes shut.
She had spent six years obeying one promise.
One lie.
One sacrifice.
Tonight, it had finally shattered.
Then an elegant woman stepped out from the crowd.
Vanessa.
She wore the same flawless smile she'd always worn.
But for the first time...
It looked frightened.
"Daniel is confused," she laughed nervously.
"Children become attached to their caregivers."
Before anyone could answer, Daniel looked directly at Vanessa.
Then quietly whispered...
May you like
"You're not my mommy."
The ballroom erupted into stunned silence.
