Chapter 6 – The Family We Chose

Chapter 6 – The Family We Chose
One year later, Sophie and I stood on the shore of Lake Michigan.
She skipped stones across the water, laughing as each one bounced farther than the last.
The scar hidden beneath her hair had faded.
So had the nightmares.
Therapy had helped.
Time had helped.
Most importantly...
She finally knew none of it had been her fault.
I had changed my last name back to my grandmother's maiden name.
Not because I hated where I came from.
Because I refused to let my future be defined by people who confused loyalty with silence.
One afternoon my father called.
"I know forgiveness is too much to ask."
"It is," I answered honestly.
"But I hope someday we can earn a chance to know Sophie."
I looked at my daughter chasing seagulls across the beach.
Children deserve people who protect them.
Not people who protect the ones who hurt them.
"I hope you become the kind of people she deserves."
Then I ended the call.
Some endings aren't tragedies.
They're freedom.
As the sun settled over the water, Sophie slipped her hand into mine.
"Mom?"
"Yes?"
"You believed me."
I smiled.
"I always will."
She squeezed my hand.
We walked forward together, leaving only two sets of footprints in the sand.
Behind us lay thirty years of lies.
Ahead of us waited something far stronger than the family we had lost.
May you like
The family we chose to become.
The End.
