Chapter 2 – The Camera Never Lied

Chapter 2 – The Camera Never Lied
The ambulance arrived just as the ballroom erupted into frantic whispers.
Two paramedics rushed toward Sophie while a pair of Chicago police officers entered through the grand doors.
Preston immediately straightened his tuxedo.
"Officer," he said confidently, pointing at me. "This woman is trying to ruin my wedding after her daughter stole my phone."
My father stepped beside him without hesitation.
"I witnessed the entire incident," Richard Bennett said in his measured attorney's voice. "My son acted in self-defense after confronting a thief."
The younger officer looked uncertain.
Then I spoke.
"I want the hotel's surveillance footage."
The room became quiet again.
Preston's smile disappeared for the first time that evening.
"The camera over the entrance," I continued, pointing upward. "It covers the reception floor and the bridal table."
Madison turned toward her husband.
"You said there weren't cameras."
"I... I meant inside the dressing rooms," Preston answered too quickly.
The hotel manager, Michael Lawson, stepped forward.
"Actually, Mrs. Bennett is correct. We have four security cameras covering this ballroom. They record continuously."
My mother's face lost its color.
Preston laughed nervously.
"Fine. Show it. It'll prove she stole my phone."
"It'll prove something," I replied.
Twenty minutes later everyone crowded into the hotel's conference room.
The footage appeared on a large television.
The timestamp began thirty minutes before the ceremony.
Guests watched themselves mingling.
Servers carried trays.
Children laughed.
Then the camera focused on our table.
There was Sophie, coloring quietly beside me.
She never left her chair.
Not once.
A murmur spread through the room.
The manager fast-forwarded.
The bridal table entered the frame.
Preston walked over while no one was watching.
He looked around carefully.
Then he slipped his own phone into Sophie's little denim jacket hanging on the back of her chair.
He walked away smiling.
The room fell completely silent.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody moved.
My father stared at the screen as though it belonged to someone else.
My mother's lips trembled.
Madison slowly stepped backward from her new husband.
"Oh my God..."
Then the footage continued.
It showed Preston confronting Sophie.
It showed him "finding" the phone exactly where he had hidden it.
Finally...
It showed him grabbing the heavy oak menu board.
There was no struggle.
No threat.
No self-defense.
Only a grown man deliberately striking an eight-year-old child.
The recording ended.
No one spoke for nearly a full minute.
Then Officer Daniel Harris quietly said,
"Mr. Bennett..."
May you like
He reached for his handcuffs.
"...you're under arrest."
