Chapter 8 - The Bail Hearing

The county courthouse was a cold, intimidating building made of gray concrete.

I sat in the very back row of the gallery, hidden among the reporters.

The story of the wealthy socialite poisoning her daughter-in-law had gone completely viral.

Local news vans were parked all over the front lawn.

The heavy wooden double doors swung open, and Margaret was led into the room.

She was wearing a bright orange county jail jumpsuit.

Her hair, usually styled to perfection, was tangled and greasy.

She looked completely miserable, and I felt a dark, satisfying wave of vindication.

Her expensive lawyer, Charles, stood up and straightened his designer suit.

"Your Honor, my client is a pillar of this community," Charles began smoothly.

"She has zero criminal record and is heavily involved in local charities."

"We are requesting she be released on her own recognizance."

The prosecuting attorney, a sharp-eyed woman named Ms. Davis, immediately stood up.

"Objection, Your Honor," Ms. Davis said sharply.

"The defendant is a severe flight risk with vast financial resources."

"Furthermore, her crimes demonstrate a deeply calculated and malicious nature."

"She systematically poisoned a recovering postpartum mother."

"She then weaponized Child Protective Services in an attempt to steal a newborn infant."

The judge, an older man with no patience for nonsense, adjusted his glasses.

He looked down at Margaret with blatant disgust.

"I have reviewed the security footage submitted into evidence," the judge stated loudly.

Margaret flinched, staring a hole into the floor.

"Your behavior in that video is completely abhorrent, Mrs. Vance," the judge continued.

"You showed zero regard for human life."

"You manipulated the system intended to protect vulnerable children."

Charles desperately tried to intervene.

"Your Honor, my client was merely trying to help..."

The judge slammed his wooden gavel down with a deafening crack.

"Do not insult my intelligence, Counselor," the judge warned.

"I am denying bail."

"The defendant will remain in county lockup until the trial commences."

A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom gallery.

Margaret’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with sheer panic.

"No!" Margaret shrieked, completely losing her composure.

"You cannot keep me in that filthy place!"

"I am Margaret Vance! I demand to be released!"

Two massive court bailiffs immediately grabbed her by the arms.

She kicked and screamed like a petulant toddler as they dragged her toward the holding cell door.

"You will pay for this!" she screamed across the courtroom.

I just sat in the back row, a quiet smile playing on my lips.

She was finally experiencing exactly what she deserved.

I quietly slipped out of the courtroom and walked out into the bright sunshine.

I couldn't wait to go home and tell Elena the good news.
