Chapter 5 - The Counterattack

The hospital hallway was completely silent as the video played.
They watched Margaret crush the pills.
They watched her sweep the powder into the steaming mug.
They watched her smile to herself before carrying the mug out of the frame.
Agent Harris slowly handed the phone back to me.

Her stern demeanor had completely vanished.
"I need you to send that video to my official email address immediately," she instructed.
One of the police officers pulled out his radio.
"We are going to need to dispatch a unit to the suspect's residence," the officer said.
"What is your mother's address, sir?"
I gladly gave them Margaret's address in the upscale suburbs.
"She called us hoping we would take your child into emergency custody," Agent Harris explained.
"Filing a false CPS report is a crime."
"Spiking someone's drink with prescription narcotics is an even bigger one."
"She is going to be facing significant jail time for this."
A heavy weight finally lifted off my chest.
Margaret had overplayed her hand.
She thought she was smarter than everyone else.
She thought her money and status would protect her from any consequences.
The emergency room doors opened, and the doctor stepped out again.
"Your wife is awake," he announced with a gentle smile.
"She is very groggy, but she is asking for you and the baby."
I thanked Agent Harris and the officers before practically running into the room.
Elena was propped up on several pillows.
She looked exhausted, but the terrifying blue tint was gone from her lips.
Tears welled up in her eyes the second she saw me and Leo.
"I'm so sorry," she cried weakly.
"I tried to stay awake, I really tried."
I sat on the edge of the hospital bed and wrapped my free arm around her.
"Shh, you have nothing to apologize for," I whispered, kissing her forehead.
"It wasn't your fault."
"Margaret drugged you, Elena."
Elena's eyes widened in horror.
"She did what?"
I quickly explained everything that had just happened in the hallway.
I told her about the toxicology report, the security footage, and the CPS agent.
"The police are on their way to arrest her right now," I told my wife.
Elena let out a long, shaky breath and leaned her head against my shoulder.
For the first time since Leo was born, we actually felt safe.

Margaret's reign of terror was finally over.
We were going to make sure she never came near our family again.
