Chapter 9 - The Empty Accounts.

The Bellweather video arrived that afternoon.

Mara insisted they watch it in a conference room with Evan present.

Claire sat at the end of the table while the lender's counsel joined remotely.

"We are providing this under a preservation agreement and without waiving any rights."

Mara nodded.

"Understood."

The screen went black.

Then Claire's face appeared.

For one horrifying second, Claire wondered whether she had forgotten an entire meeting.

The woman on-screen wore Claire's hair in the same low bun she often used for business calls.

She wore a cream blouse similar to one Claire owned.

The lighting was soft.

The image was slightly compressed.

A Bellweather representative asked whether she understood that certain voting shares were being pledged as collateral.

The woman nodded.

Then she spoke.

"Yes, I understand the pledge and authorize the collateral transfer."

Claire's stomach turned.

The voice sounded like her.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

The cadence was close.

The mouth movement was slightly wrong at the edges.

Evan paused the video.

"This recording needs technical analysis."

Bellweather's counsel looked uncomfortable.

"Our employee believed he was speaking with Mrs. Hale."

Mara answered.

"Did your employee require a government identification check?"

"Identity verification was handled through documents supplied beforehand."

"Did he call Mrs. Hale at a number independently obtained by Bellweather?"

"I would need to confirm."

Mara's face did not move.

"Please do."

Claire stared at the frozen image of her own counterfeit face.

Dominic had not simply copied her signature.

Someone had constructed a version of her.

A version that agreed.

A version that authorized.

A version that could be played back later when the real Claire objected.

"Can you prove it's fake?"

Claire asked Evan.

"I can analyze it."

"That wasn't my question."

Evan looked at her.

"I believe we can identify inconsistencies, source artifacts, or provenance problems if they exist."

"And if we can't?"

Mara answered.

"Then we prove you were elsewhere, challenge the verification process, examine metadata, trace the source, and use every other fact we have."

Claire nodded slowly.

One fact at a time.

That had become her new religion.

After the meeting, Evan gave them worse news.

Northline's primary account had been emptied.

Three transfers totaling one point nine million dollars had moved the previous night.

"Where?"

Claire asked.

"One domestic account, two international intermediary accounts."

"Can we recover it?"

"That depends on the institutions, timing, legal process, and where it went next."

Claire rubbed her eyes.

"Who authorized the transfers?"

"Brooke's credentials."

Mara looked at Claire.

"Which explains why she may suddenly want to talk."

Claire's phone had received six more messages from Brooke.

The latest was different.

Dominic is going to blame all of this on me.

Another arrived.

He already has.

Claire showed Mara.

"Can we meet her?"

"With counsel and appropriate documentation, yes."

Brooke refused a law office.

She agreed to a private room at a downtown hotel with her own attorney present.

Claire almost admired the irony.

Ashford had renovated the hotel five years earlier.

Brooke arrived twenty minutes late.

She looked nothing like the woman from Claire's kitchen.

Her hair was tied back carelessly.

There were shadows beneath her eyes.

Her attorney, Daniel Cho, spoke first.

"Ms. Mercer is here voluntarily to discuss potential resolution of civil issues."

Mara answered.

"We are here to listen."

Brooke looked at Claire.

"You hate me."

Claire sat back.

"That isn't why I'm here."

"You should."

"Probably."

Brooke's mouth tightened.

"Dominic told me your marriage was over."

Claire said nothing.

"He said you were together for appearances and Leo."

Still nothing.

"He said you had separate lives."

Claire finally spoke.

"Did our bedroom look separate?"

Brooke flushed.

"I know how it looks."

"It looks accurate."

Daniel placed a hand lightly near Brooke's elbow.

"We are not here to relitigate the personal relationship."

Claire looked at him.

"Your client asked whether I hated her."

Mara intervened.

"Tell us about Northline."

Brooke took a breath.

"I created it eighteen months ago."

"Why?"

"Dominic said Ashford needed an outside strategy vehicle that could move faster than internal procurement."

"And pay your daughter's tuition?"

Brooke looked down.

"That came later."

"How much did you personally receive?"

Daniel spoke.

"We can provide a schedule."

Claire looked back at Brooke.

"Did you know invoices were inflated?"

Brooke's silence answered.

"Did you know my signature was copied?"

"Not at first."

Claire felt her stomach tighten.

"When did you know?"

"Three months ago."

"And you stayed."

Brooke looked up.

"Yes."

The honesty surprised Claire.

"Why?"

"Because by then my name was everywhere."

Brooke's eyes filled, but she did not cry.

"Dominic said if I walked away, he would tell the board I designed the whole thing."

Claire remained still.

"Did you?"

"No."

"Did you benefit from it?"

"Yes."

"Did you help hide it?"

Brooke swallowed.

"Yes."

"Then stop asking me to decide whether you are a victim before you finish telling the truth."

Brooke looked down.

Daniel did not object.

Mara asked about Bellweather.

Brooke's face changed.

"That was Dominic and Victoria."

"You were in the photograph."

"I introduced Bellweather."

"Why?"

"My college roommate works there."

"The man in the photograph?"

"No."

"Who is he?"

Brooke hesitated.

"Graham Voss."

Mara wrote the name.

"What does he do?"

"Private credit placement."

"For Bellweather?"

"Sometimes."

"Meaning?"

"He's an independent broker."

Claire thought of Dominic's warning that Bellweather was bigger than Brooke.

"What was the plan?"

Brooke closed her eyes.

"Dominic said Claire would never know about the pledge unless Ashford missed a trigger."

Claire's voice sharpened.

"I am Claire."

Brooke looked embarrassed.

"Sorry."

"Continue."

"He said the loan proceeds would fund a private acquisition vehicle."

"What vehicle?"

"Hale Meridian Partners."

Claire had never heard the name.

"Owned by whom?"

"Dominic and Victoria through trusts."

Mara looked up sharply.

"What were they acquiring?"

Brooke looked directly at Claire.

"Ashford assets."

The room became silent.

Claire felt the betrayal become almost too large to process.

"Explain."

"Not the whole company."

Brooke spoke quickly.

"Specific projects."

"Which projects?"

"Denver, Phoenix, the Harbor Point hotel, and two medical developments."

Those were among Ashford's most profitable assets.

"How?"

"If Ashford had a liquidity event, the projects could be sold or refinanced."

"At distressed prices."

Brooke nodded.

"And Hale Meridian would be positioned to buy."

Claire looked at Mara.

Mara's face was stone.

"Why would Dominic damage the company he worked for?"

Brooke laughed bitterly.

"Because he doesn't think it's your company."

Claire stared at her.

"What does he think?"

"He thinks your father stole it from his family."

Claire's breath caught.

"What?"

Brooke looked surprised.

"You really don't know."

"Know what?"

Brooke leaned forward.

"Dominic's grandfather was one of your father's original partners."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

"Ask Mara."

Claire turned.

Mara looked genuinely stunned.

"I did not know that."

Brooke continued.

"Dominic says his grandfather lost everything when your father bought him out during the 2008 crash."

Claire remembered Dominic's courthouse comment.

Ask your lawyer why your father almost lost Ashford in 2008.

Brooke reached into her bag.

Daniel stopped her.

She nodded to him.

He removed a sealed envelope instead.

"This is a copy, not an original."

He slid it toward Mara.

Inside was an old partnership agreement dated eighteen years earlier.

The names at the top were Charles Ashford and Raymond Hale.

Claire stared at the second name.

Raymond Hale.

Dominic's grandfather.

Brooke spoke quietly.

"Dominic didn't marry you by accident."

Claire looked up.

"What are you saying?"

Brooke's face had gone pale.

"I'm saying he knew exactly who you were before the night he claimed you met for the first time."

Claire felt the room tilt.

"How long before?"

Brooke swallowed.

"At least two years."

Claire's phone began ringing on the table.

Elise.

Claire almost ignored it.

Then she saw three missed calls beneath the current one.

She answered.

Elise's voice was breathless.

"Claire, Dominic picked Leo up."

Claire stood so fast the chair fell backward.

"What?"

"The monitor arrived with him."

"It's not his visitation time."

"They had paperwork."

Mara was already on her feet.

Claire pressed the phone closer.

"What paperwork?"

Elise's voice shook.

"An amended temporary order."

Claire looked at Mara.

Mara's face went white.

May you like

"There is no amended order."
