Chapter 10 - The Estate Gates.

Mara did not raise her voice.

That made the emergency feel more serious.

"Elise, photograph every page they showed you if you still have access to it."

"They took the copy with them."

"Who is the monitor?"

Elise gave her the name.

Mara was already typing.

"Claire, do not drive anywhere yet."

Claire had her bag in her hand.

"My son is with Dominic."

"And we are going to find out exactly where he is without creating a second problem."

Claire hated every word because every word was correct.

Brooke sat frozen across the hotel conference room.

"He said he was going to force you to negotiate."

Claire turned on her.

"You knew this?"

"Not about Leo."

"What did you know?"

"Dominic said if the audit went too far, he had leverage you couldn't ignore."

Claire felt Mara's hand close briefly around her arm.

It was not comfort.

It was a reminder to stay focused.

Mara reached the professional monitor by phone.

The woman sounded horrified.

She had received an email that morning appearing to come from the family court's electronic service system.

Attached was what looked like an amended order changing Dominic's visit to that afternoon.

She had checked the case number.

It matched.

She had not independently called the clerk because the document looked authentic.

Mara asked the question that mattered.

"Where are they now?"

"The Hale residence."

Claire exhaled for the first time in nearly a minute.

Leo was at the estate.

He was not on a highway.

He was not at an airport.

He was not missing in the endless sense her fear had created.

The monitor continued.

"I'm still outside."

"Why?"

"Mr. Hale told me the order also removed the monitoring requirement once Leo entered the residence."

Mara closed her eyes.

"It does not."

"I know that now."

The woman's voice shook.

"I called the clerk after Elise questioned it."

"And?"

"The clerk says no amended order exists."

Claire's knees nearly gave way.

Mara's tone hardened.

"Stay where you are."

"I already called local law enforcement."

"Good."

Claire grabbed her coat.

Mara looked at Daniel Cho.

"Keep your client here."

Daniel nodded.

Brooke stood.

"Claire."

Claire looked at her.

"If Victoria is there, she will try to make Leo think this is his fault."

Claire's expression changed.

"How do you know?"

Brooke looked down.

"Because that's what she does."

Claire left without another word.

Mara drove.

Claire sat in the passenger seat calling Elise, Dr. Reed, and then the responding officer after Mara obtained the incident number.

Every red light felt personal.

Every slow car felt malicious.

Claire forced herself to breathe in counts of four because that was what she taught Leo when his body believed danger was larger than the room.

When the estate came into view, two patrol vehicles were parked outside the gates.

The professional monitor stood near her car speaking with an officer.

Dominic's black SUV was visible near the front entrance.

The gates were closed.

Claire got out before Mara had fully parked.

An officer approached her.

"Mrs. Hale?"

"Claire Ashford Hale."

"We are verifying the custody documentation now."

"There is no amended order."

"The clerk confirmed that to us."

Claire looked through the iron gates.

"My son is inside."

"We understand."

"Then why are we standing here?"

The officer kept his voice calm.

"Because this is a domestic custody matter involving a residence, and we're making sure we act on verified information."

Claire wanted to scream.

Instead, she nodded.

Mara joined them and handed over a certified copy of the actual temporary order from the court portal.

The officer compared it with an image Elise had captured from her front-door camera as the monitor held up the false document.

The formatting was nearly identical.

One paragraph had been changed.

The court's signature block looked real.

The timestamp did not.

The officer spoke into his radio.

The estate intercom suddenly crackled.

Dominic's voice came through.

"Claire."

Her entire body went cold.

She walked toward the call panel.

"Put Leo on."

"He's fine."

"Put him on."

"We need to talk first."

Mara stepped closer.

Claire looked at the officer.

He nodded once but held up a hand signaling her not to approach the gate itself.

"There is nothing to discuss until I know Leo is okay."

Dominic sighed through the speaker.

Then another voice appeared.

Small.

"Mom?"

Claire closed her eyes.

"I'm here, sweetheart."

"Are you mad?"

The question nearly broke her.

"No."

"Dad said the schedule changed."

"You didn't do anything wrong."

"Okay."

She heard Dominic say something away from the intercom.

Leo's voice disappeared.

Claire's eyes opened.

"Dominic."

"He's safe."

"Open the gate."

"If you stop the Northline investigation, we can work this out privately."

The officer's expression sharpened.

Mara immediately raised her phone and began taking notes.

Claire stared at the speaker.

For years, Dominic had presented himself as the calmer one.

He liked telling people Claire was emotional while he was strategic.

Now, in front of two officers and a court-appointed professional, he had just attached access to their child to a corporate investigation.

"You want me to stop the audit?"

Claire asked.

Mara looked at her, understanding immediately what she was doing.

Dominic answered.

"I want you to stop destroying our lives."

"That wasn't my question."

A pause.

"Yes."

Claire swallowed.

"And if I don't?"

Mara's eyes warned her not to push too far.

Dominic exhaled.

"Then this becomes ugly."

The officer stepped toward the intercom.

"Mr. Hale, this is Officer Ramirez with county police."

Silence.

"We have confirmed there is no amended custody order on file."

Dominic responded quickly.

"My attorney sent me the order."

"Then your attorney can provide it to us."

"I have it here."

"Open the gate and bring the child to the front entrance with no one else approaching."

Dominic did not answer.

Claire could hear her own heartbeat.

Thirty seconds passed.

Then the gate motors started.

The iron panels slowly separated.

Claire saw Leo before anyone else.

He stood on the front steps holding Mr. Bear.

A uniformed officer who had entered from a side access point walked beside him.

Dominic remained several feet back.

Victoria stood in the doorway.

Claire wanted to run.

She forced herself to walk until the officer nodded that she could approach.

Then Leo ran the final few feet.

Claire dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around him.

His body shook once against her chest.

"I thought you changed your mind."

"About what?"

"About wanting me."

Claire pulled back and looked at him.

"Never."

He stared at her eyes as if checking for truth.

"Never?"

"Never."

Behind them, Mara was speaking with Officer Ramirez.

The professional monitor was crying quietly beside her car.

Dominic walked toward the gate.

"Claire, I was given paperwork."

She stood with one hand on Leo's shoulder.

"Then give it to the police."

"This has been blown completely out of proportion."

Victoria called from the steps.

"Dominic, stop talking."

Claire looked at her.

Victoria's face was pale.

For the first time, she looked less like a matriarch and more like a person who had realized the family name could not control a police report.

Officer Ramirez approached Dominic.

"Sir, we need a copy of the document you relied on."

Dominic handed him several pages.

Mara watched the exchange.

Claire did not.

She took Leo to the car.

Inside, he buckled his seat belt and held Mr. Bear against his stomach.

Claire sat beside him rather than in front.

"Do you want to tell me what happened?"

Leo shook his head.

"Okay."

She waited.

After a minute, he spoke anyway.

"Dad said we were fixing the family."

Claire kept her face neutral.

"What did that mean?"

"He said if I told everyone I like staying with him, you would stop being mad."

Claire's throat tightened.

"Did he tell you what to say?"

Leo nodded.

"He practiced questions."

Claire thought of the hidden hall camera.

Practice.

Dominic seemed to rehearse everything now.

"You don't have to practice answers for me."

"I know."

Leo looked out the window.

Then he reached into his pocket.

"I found this under Dad's desk."

He placed a small brass key in Claire's hand.

She frowned.

"Why did you take it?"

"I thought it was mine."

"Why?"

"Because it has an L."

Claire turned the key over.

A tiny metal tag was attached.

L-17.

She recognized the style.

It was not a house key.

It looked like the keys used for secure document boxes at Ashford's private records facility.

Claire looked through the windshield toward Dominic.

He was speaking rapidly to the officer.

For the first time that day, fear left Claire long enough for another feeling to take its place.

Curiosity.

"Leo, did Dad say anything about that key?"

The boy thought.

"He told Grandma the old papers were safer where you never look."

Claire closed her fingers around the key.

The estate gates began to close between her and Dominic.

This time, she was the one leaving with Leo.

May you like

And Dominic had no idea what his son had just carried out of the house.

THE RAG ON MARBLE
