Chapter 1 — The Man Who Was Never Broken

Chapter 1 — The Man Who Was Never Broken
Silence consumed the dining room.
No one moved.
No one even dared to breathe too loudly.
The electric wheelchair remained beside the older man like an abandoned disguise.
Richard slowly straightened the sleeves of his tailored gray suit before looking directly at his wife.
For the first time in decades, Margaret's confidence disappeared.
Her lips trembled.
"You... you couldn't walk."
Richard's eyes remained cold.
"I couldn't."
A long pause settled between them.
"Not until six months ago."
The words struck the room harder than any shout ever could.
Daniel stared at his father.
"You've... been hiding it?"
Richard nodded once.
"I had to."
He slowly walked around the dining table, every step measured, every movement deliberate.
"If people believe the king is weak..."
He looked directly at Margaret.
"...they reveal exactly who they are."
Margaret's breathing became uneven.
Richard had spent years pretending to be helpless.
Years listening.
Years watching.
Years allowing everyone inside the family to believe they controlled the empire.
Including his own wife.
His gaze shifted toward Emily.
The frightened young woman instinctively lowered her eyes.
Richard's expression softened for the first time.
"You protected my grandchild before anyone protected my family."
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
Richard gently placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"From this moment forward, no one will ever threaten you again."
Margaret finally found her voice.
"You planned this..."
Richard answered quietly.
May you like
"No."
"You did."
