CHAPTER 3 — David Learns the Truth

CHAPTER 3 — David Learns the Truth

David arrived fourteen minutes later.

Someone from the hospital had called him with only five words.

"Sarah has been assaulted. Come immediately."

He ran through the emergency department doors still wearing his construction helmet.

His eyes found me lying on a hospital bed with fetal monitors strapped across my stomach.

His face turned white.

"Sarah!"

He rushed to my side.

"Are you okay? Is our daughter okay?"

The obstetrician gave him a reassuring smile.

"The baby's heartbeat is strong."

David collapsed into the chair beside me, gripping my hand with both of his.

Then he noticed the bruise.

His breathing stopped.

"Who did this?"

Nobody answered.

No one had to.

David slowly turned around.

His mother stood between two security officers.

Her lipstick was smeared.

Her confidence had vanished.

She whispered his name.

"David..."

His eyes filled with disbelief.

"No."

She reached toward him.

"I can explain."

"You hit my wife?"

"I didn't know she was pregnant enough to fall that hard—"

David flinched as though she'd struck him too.

"You didn't know?"

His voice rose.

"You looked directly at her stomach every time you insulted her."

"You called our daughter an insurance policy."

"You humiliated my wife for years."

"And today..."

He swallowed painfully.

"You put my child in danger."

Eleanor began crying.

"I was angry."

"I lost my temper."

David slowly removed the wedding ring from his finger.

It wasn't a dramatic gesture.

It was quiet.

Deliberate.

Final.

He placed it into his mother's trembling hand.

"You always demanded I choose."

He looked her straight in the eyes.

"Today you made the choice for me."

"I don't have a mother anymore."

She gasped.

"David—"

"Don't call me again."

"Don't visit us."

"And if my daughter ever asks why she has no grandmother..."

His voice broke.

"I'll tell her the truth."

He turned away.

He never looked back.

Across the room, Richard watched silently.

For the first time since meeting David years earlier...

He finally understood something.

The young architect hadn't married Sarah for money.

He had just chosen love over everything else.
