CHAPTER 2 — The Truth Beneath the Badge

CHAPTER 2 — The Truth Beneath the Badge
"My God... Sarah."
Richard Sterling's voice broke.
He gently cupped my uninjured cheek, his hands shaking as he examined the cut left by Eleanor's diamond ring.
"Are you hurt anywhere else?"
I tried to smile through the tears.
"My back... but I think the baby is okay."
"Think?"
He turned sharply.
"OB! Trauma team! Ultrasound! Now!"
The emergency department exploded into motion.
Doctors who moments earlier had been frozen in disbelief sprinted toward us.
A stretcher appeared within seconds.
The Chief of Obstetrics personally pushed it.
No one questioned the order.
No one dared.
Eleanor laughed nervously.
"This is ridiculous."
She looked around as if waiting for someone to support her.
"She's only a nurse."
Richard slowly stood.
When he finally faced Eleanor, his expression was terrifyingly calm.
"You've made a catastrophic mistake."
She frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
"You assaulted my daughter."
Silence.
Not ordinary silence.
The kind that makes the entire world stop breathing.
Beatrice gasped.
Maggie covered her mouth.
One of the security officers visibly lost his balance.
Eleanor blinked.
"I'm sorry?"
Richard took one deliberate step closer.
"Sarah Sterling."
He spoke each word with unmistakable clarity.
"My only child."
"My successor."
"The future owner of Horizon Medical Center."
Eleanor stared at me as though seeing me for the first time.
"No..."
She laughed weakly.
"That's impossible."
"My son said she was from the suburbs."
Richard's eyes never left hers.
"Because Sarah wanted a normal life."
"She refused executive privileges."
"She insisted on earning every promotion herself."
"Every overnight shift."
"Every trauma certification."
"Every patient she saved."
"You judged her worth by her uniform."
His voice hardened.
"And today you assaulted the woman who owns more of this hospital than anyone standing in this room."
Eleanor's knees nearly buckled.
She looked at me.
Then at the black titanium badge.
Then back to Richard.
"I... I didn't know..."
"No."
Richard answered coldly.
"You didn't bother to know."
Hospital security immediately surrounded Eleanor.
"Mrs. Vance," the head of security said quietly, "please surrender your purse."
"You can't be serious!"
"I know the governor!"
"I donate millions!"
Richard didn't even acknowledge her protest.
Instead, he turned toward the staff gathered around us.
"I want every surveillance camera."
"Every body-camera recording."
"Every witness statement."
"No footage leaves this hospital."
"No recording is deleted."
"If one second disappears, whoever deleted it will never work in medicine again."
The Chief Legal Officer, who had arrived only moments earlier, nodded immediately.
"It'll all be preserved."
Richard looked back at me.
"I'm so sorry, sweetheart."
I squeezed his hand.
"You told me to build my own life."
"I did."
"And you did."
His voice cracked.
"But I never imagined protecting your independence would leave you unprotected."
Behind us, Eleanor's confident posture completely collapsed.
For the first time in her life...
May you like
She realized money couldn't buy her way out.
Not this time.
