Chapter 9 — The Man Who Helped My Mother Hide Everything

I couldn’t sleep that night.

Not because of the pain.

Not because of the machines keeping track of my condition.

Not even because my mother had attacked me.

I couldn’t sleep because every answer I found only created more questions.

My family had spent years hiding pieces of my own life from me.

My inheritance.

My medical condition.

My finances.

And now there was another person involved.

Robert Hale.

The man who had handled my grandfather’s trust.

The man who had been removed after a financial investigation.

The man who had somehow appeared at my hospital moments before everything exploded.

I stared at the ceiling until sunrise.

By morning, my decision was made.

I was done waiting for the truth to come to me.

I was going to find it.

At 8:00 a.m., Claire arrived with a folder in her hand.

She looked serious.

That usually meant bad news.

“Good morning,” she said.

I looked at the folder.

“What did you find?”

She placed it on the table.

“Robert Hale was not just involved with your grandfather’s trust.”

I opened the folder.

“What else?”

“He had a professional relationship with your mother.”

My stomach tightened.

“How?”

Claire pulled out several documents.

“Your mother hired him privately after your grandfather’s death.”

“For what?”

“Financial advice.”

I laughed quietly.

“Financial advice?”

Claire nodded.

“But that’s not the most interesting part.”

I looked at her.

“What is?”

“They met several times before the trust documents were changed.”

My fingers tightened around the blanket.

“Changed?”

“Yes.”

“What changes?”

Claire opened another document.

“Originally, your grandfather’s trust named you as the sole beneficiary with limited trustee involvement.”

“That makes sense.”

“Yes.”

She pointed to another page.

“Six weeks after his death, new paperwork was submitted.”

I scanned the document.

My eyes stopped.

Beneficiary access delayed.

“What does that mean?”

“It means your mother successfully convinced the trustee that you should not have direct control of the inheritance.”

“Based on what?”

Claire looked at me.

“A psychological evaluation.”

My heart dropped.

“What?”

“She claimed you were emotionally unstable and unable to make major financial decisions.”

I felt sick.

Not because the claim was true.

Because I knew where it came from.

My mother.

She had spent years creating a version of me that people would believe.

The daughter who was too sensitive.

Too trusting.

Too fragile.

The daughter who could be controlled.

“Did I ever have an evaluation?”

“No.”

“Then how did he approve it?”

Claire looked at the papers.

“That’s what we need to investigate.”

I looked at the documents again.

“Robert Hale.”

“Yes.”

“He helped her.”

“It appears so.”

My anger grew.

This man had helped steal years of my life.

He had helped convince everyone that I couldn’t control my own future.

Then I remembered something.

“He was at the hospital.”

Claire nodded.

“The footage confirms it.”

“Why?”

“We don’t know yet.”

I looked toward the window.

“He came because he knew she was going to attack me.”

Claire didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

The possibility was terrifying.

A knock interrupted us.

A hospital security officer entered.

“Ms. Whitaker?”

“Yes?”

“We found something else in the security footage.”

My heart immediately sank.

“What?”

He handed Claire a tablet.

“We reviewed the hallway cameras from the day of the incident.”

Claire watched the footage.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

She turned the screen toward me.

The video showed my mother arriving at the hospital.

My father.

Connor.

And behind them...

Robert Hale.

But what shocked me wasn’t that he was there.

It was what happened next.

The footage showed Robert handing my mother an envelope.

My mother looked around.

Then she put it inside her coat.

“What is that?” I whispered.

The security officer shook his head.

“We don’t know.”

Claire paused the video.

“This changes things.”

“Why?”

“Because if that envelope contained information related to your trust, your mother may have planned this attack before she entered your room.”

My chest tightened.

The attack wasn’t spontaneous.

It wasn’t just anger.

It was planned.

I looked at the screen.

At my mother’s face.

At the confidence in her expression.

She hadn’t walked into my hospital room hoping I would agree.

She had walked in expecting me to surrender.

And when I refused...

She lost control.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something told me to answer.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice responded.

“Maya Whitaker?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Samuel Carter.”

I froze.

The new trustee.

The one who had replaced Robert Hale.

“I understand you’re looking into your grandfather’s trust.”

“Yes.”

There was silence.

Then he said:

“I’ve been waiting for you to discover the truth.”

My heart started racing.

“What truth?”

His voice became quieter.

“The trust was never lost.”

I sat up.

“What?”

“The money is still there.”

I looked at Claire.

She immediately started taking notes.

“Then where is it?”

Another pause.

Then Samuel said:

“Your mother never owned the account.”

My heart pounded.

“Then whose name is on it?”

His answer changed everything.

“Yours.”

I couldn’t speak.

“The trust was transferred into your name years ago.”

“But Claire found withdrawals.”

“Yes.”

“Then how?”

Samuel’s voice became serious.

“Because someone used your identity to access the funds.”

The room went silent.

My identity.

Someone had stolen my name.

My future.

My inheritance.

And suddenly, the question was no longer:

Why did my family want my money?

The question was:

Who helped them steal it?

Before ending the call, Samuel said one final thing.

“Maya, there is something you need to know about Robert Hale.”

“What?”

“He didn’t lose his license because of your trust.”

I held my breath.

“Then why?”

Samuel answered:

“Because your grandfather discovered what he was doing before he died.”

I looked at Claire.

My grandfather had known.

He had been fighting this battle before I even knew there was one.

And now I had to finish what he started.

To be continued...
