Chapter 11 — The Truth About My Grandfather’s Last Days

For several seconds after the call ended, nobody moved.
The room felt frozen.
My mother’s final words repeated in my mind.
“Your grandfather didn’t leave those files to protect you from me.”
“He left them because he knew I wasn’t the only person you needed to fear.”
I looked at Claire.
Then at Samuel.
“What does that mean?”
Neither of them answered immediately.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because I had spent my entire life believing my family was the source of every problem.
My mother was controlling.
My father was weak.
Connor was selfish.
But now there was another possibility.
Someone else had been involved.
Someone my grandfather had discovered.
Samuel slowly sat down.
“Maya, there is something I never told you.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“Another secret?”
His expression showed regret.
“Yes.”
I looked away.
It was becoming a pattern.
Everyone seemed to have a reason for keeping things from me.
Everyone claimed they were protecting me.
But all they ever protected was themselves.
“Tell me.”
Samuel took a deep breath.
“Your grandfather did not die peacefully.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“He had a heart attack.”
“I know.”
“That’s what everyone was told.”
The room became silent.
“What are you saying?”
Samuel looked at Claire.
Then back at me.
“I’m saying your grandfather believed someone was trying to hurt him before he died.”
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“Someone?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
“We never knew for certain.”
“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?”
Samuel looked down.
“Because your grandfather specifically asked us not to.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
“Because he believed telling you would put you in danger.”
My hands became cold.
“My grandfather thought I was in danger?”
“Yes.”
“From who?”
Samuel opened the small notebook from the box.
He flipped through several pages.
“These are notes your grandfather wrote during the final months of his life.”
He handed it to me.
I read the first page.
The handwriting was shaky.
Older.
But unmistakably his.
March 12 — Robert is not acting alone.
My heart skipped.
I continued.
Someone inside the family is helping him.
I looked up.
“Inside the family?”
Samuel nodded.
“Yes.”
I turned the page.
The next note was even more disturbing.
Evelyn is ambitious. Richard is afraid. But neither of them has the ability to do this alone.
My stomach dropped.
“Then who did?”
Samuel was quiet.
“That’s what your grandfather was trying to discover.”
Claire leaned forward.
“Maya, there’s something else.”
“What?”
She opened one of the files from the flash drive.
“We found additional communication.”
“With who?”
She turned the laptop toward me.
The sender name was hidden.
But the email address was visible.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized the domain.
It belonged to a financial company.
A company I had heard of before.
“What is that?”
Samuel answered.
“A private investment firm.”
“Why would my grandfather be communicating with them?”
“He wasn’t.”
Claire clicked another file.
“This email was sent to Robert Hale.”
I read the message.
“The Whitaker trust must remain controlled until the beneficiary is removed from the agreement.”
My breathing became shallow.
Removed.
Removed from my own inheritance.
“How do you remove the beneficiary?”
Claire looked serious.
“Fraud. Legal manipulation. Or proving the beneficiary is incapable.”
My mother’s accusations suddenly made sense.
The emotional instability claims.
The fake concerns.
The story that I couldn’t manage my own money.
They weren’t random insults.
They were building a case.
A fake case.
“They were trying to make me look incompetent.”
“Yes.”
I stared at the documents.
Years of manipulation.
Years of preparation.
My mother hadn’t suddenly become desperate.
She had been planning.
Then Samuel spoke.
“There is one more thing.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“Your grandfather left a final instruction.”
“Another one?”
“Yes.”
“What did it say?”
Samuel reached into his briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.
“This was not included with the others.”
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My name.
Again.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Maya,
If you are reading this, then my greatest fear has come true.
I stopped.
My eyes filled.
I wanted to believe the people around you would choose love over greed. I wanted to believe they would protect you.
A tear slipped down my face.
But if they have failed you, remember this: you are not responsible for fixing people who benefit from hurting you.
I closed my eyes.
Because those words were exactly what I needed to hear.
The letter continued.
There is one person who knows the complete truth. Someone I trusted when I realized I might not have enough time.
My heart started racing.
Find Daniel Whitaker.
I froze.
Daniel.
The name meant nothing.
I looked at Samuel.
“Who is Daniel Whitaker?”
Samuel’s face changed.
And for the first time since he entered my room...
He looked afraid.
“Maya…”
“Who is he?”
Samuel lowered his voice.
“Your grandfather’s oldest son.”
I stared at him.
“My uncle?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t have an uncle.”
Samuel nodded.
“That’s what your family wanted you to believe.”
The room became completely silent.
“My mother has a brother?”
“Yes.”
“Where is he?”
Samuel looked at the letter.
“He disappeared years ago.”
“Why?”
His answer sent a chill through me.
“Because he discovered the same thing your grandfather discovered.”
I whispered:
“What?”
Samuel looked at me.
“That your family was built on a lie.”
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence appeared:
“Maya, if you want the truth about your grandfather’s death, meet me alone.”
Below the message was a name.
Daniel Whitaker.
I looked at Claire.
Then Samuel.
The past I thought I understood was disappearing piece by piece.
And now the final person who knew the truth had returned.
But I had one question.
May you like
Why had he waited until now?
