Chapter 5 – Standing Without Fear

Chapter 5 – Standing Without Fear
Six months later, the courtroom fell silent as I took the witness stand.
Matthew refused to meet my eyes.
He looked smaller than I remembered.
Not because prison or public scandal had changed him.
Because fear no longer belonged to me.
The prosecutor asked only one final question.
"What do you want the court to understand?"
I looked toward the judge.
Then toward the gallery, where my father sat quietly beside my mother.
"I stayed because I believed love meant endurance," I said.
"I left because I finally understood that love should never require surviving violence."
Nothing more needed to be said.
After several days of testimony and deliberation, the court found Matthew guilty on multiple charges.
The sentence reflected both the seriousness of the assault and the evidence presented throughout the trial.
Justice could not erase scars.
