Chapter 4 – The Cost of Silence

Chapter 4 – The Cost of Silence

Recovery proved slower than justice.

Physical therapy hurt.

Nightmares hurt more.

Some mornings I still woke expecting to hear footsteps outside the bedroom door.

My therapist never rushed me.

"You survived by adapting," she said.

"Now we'll help you live without surviving."

Weeks later, Detective Alvarez called.

Matthew had been arrested after turning himself in with legal counsel present.

He denied everything.

Then the evidence was presented.

Medical documentation.

Building security footage.

Forensic analysis.

My recorded 911 follow-up call from the hospital.

The district attorney filed multiple charges.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

I ignored every camera.

I wasn't interested in becoming a headline.

I wanted something much simpler.

Peace.

Back at the hospital, my father handed me a thin folder.

"I found these while cleaning storage."

Inside were the original business plans I had written years earlier.

Investor notes.

Financial projections.

Emails proving how much work I had contributed during NexusCore's earliest days.

I smiled through tears.

Not because they would help me win anything.

Because they reminded me that I had once believed in myself.

That woman still existed.

I simply had to find her again.
