Chapter 4: A Daughter Finds Her Voice

Three weeks later...

Clare stood in the garden outside her parents' Connecticut estate.

The bruises had begun to fade.

The scars remained.

Some always would.

Physical therapy helped.

Counseling helped more.

One afternoon, Richard joined her beneath an old oak tree.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

Finally, he handed her a worn envelope.

"I kept this."

She opened it carefully.

Inside was the letter she had written seven years earlier after leaving home.

She had never mailed it.

Richard smiled gently.

"I found it in your old room."

She read the first sentence.

"Dad... I hope one day you'll forgive me."

Tears blurred the words.

Richard placed one arm around her shoulders.

"There was never anything to forgive."

"I thought I disappointed you."

"You broke my heart."

He smiled sadly.

"But you never stopped being my daughter."

For the first time in years...

She believed him.

Months later, Clare agreed to testify.

Not only for herself.

For every person who believed silence was safer than truth.

Her testimony was calm.

Detailed.

Unshakable.

Matthew never looked at her once.
