Chapter 2: Five Minutes Until Everything Changed

The apartment door burst open exactly eight minutes later.

Not Matthew.

Three men in dark suits entered first.

"Henderson Security."

The lead man knelt beside Clare without hesitation.

His eyes scanned every bruise, every cut, every welt.

His jaw clenched.

"She's alive."

Relief swept through the room.

Another man carefully wrapped a blanket around her shoulders while a third photographed every injury, every broken piece of glass, every bloodstain across the marble floor.

Nothing would disappear.

Nothing would be forgotten.

Two minutes later, paramedics arrived.

As they lifted Clare onto the stretcher, another elevator opened.

Richard Sterling stepped into the penthouse.

His silver hair was damp from the rain.

His overcoat hung open.

He looked nothing like the composed billionaire the business world feared.

He looked like a father whose daughter had been stolen from him.

He froze.

The room said everything before anyone spoke.

The shattered orchids.

The blood.

The cane.

The bruises covering Clare's body.

His hands trembled only once.

Then his expression became perfectly still.

He picked up the antique cane.

Examined the fresh blood on its polished wood.

Without a word, he handed it to Henderson.

"Chain of custody."

"Yes, sir."

Richard walked beside Clare as the paramedics wheeled her toward the elevator.

She reached weakly for his hand.

"I'm sorry I left."

His eyes softened.

"You came home."

"That's all that matters."

Meanwhile...

Matthew Hayes was celebrating.

Lauren sat across from him inside an exclusive rooftop lounge overlooking Central Park.

Crystal champagne glasses sparkled beneath the city lights.

"You finally put her in her place," Lauren said with a satisfied smile.

Matthew leaned back.

"It was necessary."

"You think she'll tell anyone?"

He laughed.

"Who would believe her?"

Lauren raised her glass.

"To freedom."

His phone vibrated.

Chief Financial Officer.

He ignored it.

It rang again.

Then again.

Finally, annoyed, he answered.

"What?"

The terrified voice nearly shouted through the speaker.

"Matthew... every Sterling investment fund just pulled out."

His smile faded.

"What?"

"All seven of them."

"That's impossible."

"Our credit line was frozen."

Matthew sat upright.

Lauren frowned.

"The banks won't return our calls."

Another phone started ringing.

Then another.

His tablet lit up with emergency board messages.

URGENT BOARD SESSION.

LEGAL NOTICE RECEIVED.

ALL LENDING SUSPENDED.

Matthew's heartbeat accelerated.

"What the hell is happening?"

No one answered.

Because no one knew.

Except one man driving toward Manhattan.

Richard Sterling.

He hadn't made threats.

He never needed to.

He simply made one phone call.

Then another.

Then another.

The empire Matthew believed he had built alone had started collapsing.

Five minutes.

That was all it took.
