Chapter 6 - Plan B.

Detective Kim would not let me watch the contents of the hard drive immediately.

It had to be imaged, logged, and examined by a digital forensics unit before anyone touched the original.

By evening, they knew enough to call me back.

Lena came with me.

Kim led us into a small interview room and placed a laptop on the table.

“There are video files.”

I felt the blood leave my face.

“What kind of video files?”

“Mostly surveillance.”

She turned the screen toward me.

The first clip showed the underground garage of my condo building.

A time stamp in the corner placed it eight months earlier.

I watched myself park after work.

A second car entered thirty seconds later.

Peter Sloan stepped out.

He followed me to the elevator.

Another clip showed the lobby of my engineering firm.

Another showed me leaving a pharmacy.

Another showed me eating lunch with Lena.

The files went back almost three years.

I looked at Kim.

“Why?”

“We believe they were documenting your schedule.”

“For what?”

Kim opened a folder labeled PLAN B.

Inside were scanned forms for a temporary conservatorship petition.

The petitioner was Adrian.

The petition claimed I had displayed erratic behavior, financial recklessness, paranoid thinking, and episodes of confusion.

It requested emergency control over my finances.

My condo was listed as the primary asset requiring protection.

I read the document twice.

Then I saw the attached statement from a doctor.

The letter described me as emotionally unstable.

I had never met the doctor.

“They were going to declare me incompetent?”

Kim did not soften the answer.

“They were preparing to try.”

Lena swore under her breath.

The plan had layers.

If I voluntarily transferred the condo, the family won.

If I refused, Adrian would create a record of marital conflict.

If I left him, they would characterize my anger as instability.

If I accused them of manipulation, they would call it paranoia.

Then the conservatorship packet would appear.

Every reaction I had could be turned into evidence for the story they had already written.

The plate had not been Plan B.

The plate had been Adrian improvising because he believed he could get away with it.

Kim clicked on another document.

It was an internal memo from Charles to Peter.

Subject: BENNETT ASSET CONTROL.

The final line read, Family witnesses will support Adrian if escalation becomes necessary.

Twenty witnesses.

I suddenly understood why so many relatives had been invited to dinner.

They were not there to celebrate Eleanor’s birthday, as Adrian had told me.

They were there to become a future chorus.

Kim closed the laptop.

“There is one more thing.”

She handed me a printed still image from another video.

The picture showed Maya standing inside the basement room six months earlier.

She was holding my file.

Behind her stood Adrian.

His hand was on her shoulder.

Maya’s face looked terrified.

The time stamp showed 2:13 a.m.

Kim pointed to the bottom of the frame.

“There is audio.”

“What does he say?”

Kim met my eyes.

“He tells her that if she ever warns you, he will make sure she loses her children.”

My phone vibrated on the table.

Unknown number.

One message.

STOP LOOKING FOR MAYA.

Lena leaned over my shoulder and read it twice.

Then she quietly locked the conference-room door, even though we were inside a sheriff’s building.

That tiny motion told me how much the Caldwells had already changed the air around us.

They did not need to be present to control a room.

All they needed was the possibility that they could reach it.

I looked back at Kim.

“I am not stopping.”

She gave one short nod.

May you like

“Good, because neither are we.”
