Chapter 2 - The Locked Door.

The first deputy entered the dining room less than four minutes later.

His name tag read RAMIREZ.

A second deputy followed him, then two paramedics carrying medical bags.

The room transformed instantly.

People who had ignored my bleeding head suddenly became concerned relatives.

Eleanor pressed both hands against her chest.

“This is a terrible misunderstanding.”

Deputy Ramirez looked at the broken plate, the blood on my blouse, and Adrian standing ten feet away.

“It does not look misunderstood.”

Adrian tried to speak over him.

“My wife became emotional.”

I almost laughed.

Instead, I looked at the deputy.

“He hit me with that plate.”

Ramirez asked whether I wanted to press charges.

“Yes.”

The word came out before Adrian could breathe.

The deputies separated us.

One paramedic examined the side of my head while another checked my pupils.

Across the room, Adrian’s relatives began whispering to one another.

I saw Charles Caldwell, Adrian’s father, move toward the hallway and make a quick gesture to Eleanor.

Maya saw it too.

Her face tightened.

“Officer.”

Her voice cracked.

Ramirez turned.

“There is something downstairs.”

Charles stopped walking.

“Maya, be quiet.”

She flinched but remained standing.

Ramirez’s expression changed.

“What is downstairs?”

Maya swallowed.

“A locked storage room.”

Charles stepped forward.

“This is absurd.”

He smiled with the polished patience that had made him successful in boardrooms for forty years.

“The basement contains wine inventory and business records.”

Maya looked at him.

“No, it doesn’t.”

The entire family seemed to inhale at once.

Ramirez asked Maya if she had seen something illegal.

“I saw something I was told never to talk about.”

Charles’s voice sharpened.

“You are confused.”

Maya took a step backward.

“I am not confused anymore.”

The deputy called for another unit.

Adrian, now handcuffed, stared at Maya as though he could still control her with his eyes.

“You’re destroying this family.”

Maya’s face twisted.

“No, Adrian.”

“You people did that yourselves.”

The paramedic wanted to take me to the hospital.

I agreed, but I asked Ramirez one question before leaving.

“Will you check the room?”

“We will secure the property and determine whether we have lawful grounds to enter.”

Charles immediately seized on the answer.

“There.”

“You cannot simply search private property because a hysterical woman makes an accusation.”

Maya turned toward him.

Then she reached beneath the collar of her dress.

A small brass key hung from a thin chain around her neck.

Charles went perfectly still.

Maya pulled the chain free.

“I have the key.”

The room fell silent again.

Ramirez held out an evidence bag.

Maya dropped the key inside.

As the plastic sealed, Adrian shouted for the first time since police arrived.

“Maya, what did you do?”

She looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“What I should have done six years ago.”

Then a deputy returning from the lower hallway stepped into the dining room.

He looked at Ramirez.

“There’s a steel door behind the wine racks.”

He paused.

May you like

“And somebody tried to cover the lock with fresh paint.”
