CHAPTER 2 — The Call That Broke the Silence

CHAPTER 2 — The Call That Broke the Silence
The moment my father said “I’m already on the road,” something inside me finally collapsed—not from fear, but from relief.
I slid down against the kitchen island, the cold marble biting into my torn skin.
“Dad… don’t—make it a scene…”
My voice barely held together.
A pause. Then his reply, quiet and lethal.
“It stopped being a scene the moment he touched you.”
The line went dead silent except for his breathing. Controlled. Measured. The breathing of a man who had built empires and destroyed men who crossed certain lines.
I didn’t know how long I stayed there on the floor.
Five minutes passed.
Maybe ten.
Then the building changed.
At first, it was subtle—like pressure in the air.
Then came the first sound.
A helicopter.
Then another.
Then the distant rise of sirens that did not belong to ordinary emergency services.
The penthouse security system beeped once.
Then again.
And every camera in the apartment turned red.
Locked.
Override active.
Somewhere downstairs, men were entering the building who did not need permission.
I smiled weakly despite the blood in my mouth.
Matthew had once told me:
“No one gets into Sterling-level security without clearance.”
May you like
He had never understood that my last name wasn’t just clearance.
It was command.
