Chapter 2 – The Trap Closes

Chapter 2 – The Trap Closes

I stood outside beneath the jacaranda trees, my hands trembling as I watched through the glass doors.

Inside, nobody moved.

Every guest seemed frozen between disbelief and fear.

Then Ofelia suddenly panicked.

She rushed toward a hallway cabinet and dropped to her knees.

She began pulling boxes aside until she reached a black trash bag hidden in the back.

I already knew what was inside.

The previous evening I had accidentally seen her stuffing documents into it after thinking everyone had gone to bed.

Loan papers.

Forged signatures.

Property transfers.

Insurance forms.

Everything connected to a plan Julián had never wanted me to discover.

The house where we lived had originally belonged to my father.

Months earlier, Julián convinced me to sign "refinancing paperwork."

Instead, they had used forged documents to transfer ownership and apply for enormous loans against the property.

If I questioned anything...

They blamed stress.

If I resisted...

The violence got worse.

Before Ofelia could reach the bag, the front door opened again.

Two plainclothes investigators entered.

Behind them came a domestic violence advocate from the Women's Justice Center.

Finally, a forensic examiner carrying sealed evidence kits stepped inside.

Every face in the room turned pale.

Julián stared at my father.

"You called the police?"

"I called them weeks ago."

"What?"

My father folded his hands calmly.

"The investigation started the first time my daughter refused to look me in the eyes."

He explained that neighbors had reported screaming.

Bank employees had noticed suspicious financial activity.

Doctors documented repeated injuries.

Security cameras from nearby businesses had captured several violent public incidents.

Tonight was never simply a birthday celebration.

It was the final opportunity.

The investigators approached Julián.

One of them asked,

"Did you just admit to striking your wife?"

Julián immediately changed his story.

"I was joking."

Three guests spoke at once.

"You weren't joking."

"We all heard it."

"You've said things like that before."

Meanwhile, the forensic examiner opened the black trash bag.

Inside were forged legal documents, altered financial records, hidden bank statements, and property transfer forms bearing signatures that experts would later prove had been falsified.

Ofelia collapsed into a chair.

"It's not what it looks like."

The investigator replied,

"That's exactly what we're going to determine."

Within minutes both Julián and Ofelia were escorted out of the house.

Neither looked nearly as confident as they had only moments before.

May you like

For the first time in months...

I could breathe.
