Chapter 1 – The Birthday That Was Never Meant to Be

Chapter 1 – The Birthday That Was Never Meant to Be

The birthday party looked perfect.

Crystal chandeliers reflected off polished marble floors. Fresh white roses filled every corner of the dining room. A mariachi band played cheerful music while servers carried silver trays of champagne through the crowd.

Everyone believed the evening celebrated my thirty-second birthday.

I knew better.

For nearly a year, my husband, Julián, had slowly erased every part of the woman I used to be.

He controlled our finances.

He read every message on my phone.

He decided which friends I could see and which family members were "bad influences."

His mother, Ofelia, encouraged every bit of it.

"A good wife doesn't need privacy," she always reminded me.

"If your husband has to control you, it's because you give him reasons."

Every bruise had an explanation.

I bumped into a cabinet.

I slipped on the stairs.

I was clumsy.

At least, that's what everyone was expected to believe.

That afternoon Julián had slapped me because I answered my father's phone call without asking permission.

Then he ordered me to cover the bruise with makeup.

"Smile tonight," he warned.

"Everyone needs to think we're the perfect couple."

Now the birthday cake sat in front of me, covered with glowing candles.

The guests applauded.

I forced a smile.

Julián wrapped one arm around my waist so tightly it hurt.

"Make a wish," he whispered.

Before I could answer, the front door opened.

My father walked inside.

Ernesto Salgado.

For twenty-eight years he had prosecuted violent offenders before becoming one of Guadalajara's most respected experts in domestic violence investigations.

He never rushed.

He never shouted.

He simply observed.

The moment he saw me, his expression changed.

"My daughter..."

His voice was calm.

"Who did this to your face?"

The room fell silent.

Julián laughed as though someone had told a joke.

"I did."

He lifted his tequila glass.

"Happy birthday to her."

A few nervous guests chuckled.

Ofelia quickly stepped forward.

"Oh, don't take him seriously. Married couples tease each other."

My father never looked away from me.

Instead, he quietly asked,

"Valeria... tell me with your eyes."

I couldn't speak.

I simply nodded once.

That tiny movement changed everything.

My father slowly removed his wristwatch and placed it on the entry table.

"Go wait in the garden."

"Dad..."

"The garden."

Julián blocked my path.

"She's my wife."

"No," my father answered.

"She's a victim."

Then he looked directly at Julián.

"And you just confessed to assaulting her in front of thirteen witnesses."

May you like

For the first time all evening...

Julián stopped smiling.
