Chapter 7: The Night Evan Lost Four Years of His Life

The phone slipped slightly in Evan Mercer’s hand.
For several seconds, he couldn’t process what Martin had just said.
Someone drugged him.
The sentence sounded impossible.
Like something from a movie.
Not something that happened to him.
Not something connected to the woman he loved.
Not something connected to the daughter he never knew existed.
“Martin…”
Evan’s voice was low.
“Say that again.”
On the other end of the phone, the older man remained silent for a moment.
Then he repeated it.
“The night you and Leah separated…”
“You weren’t acting like yourself.”
Evan closed his eyes.
Memories began rushing back.
Fragments.
Pieces.
Things he had ignored because they hurt too much.
The headache.
The confusion.
The strange feeling that something was wrong.
The way his emotions had exploded without warning.
He had always blamed himself.
He had always believed he was the one who destroyed everything.
But now…
Maybe he had never been in control.
“What happened that night?”
Evan asked.
Martin sighed.
“I should have told you years ago.”
The regret in his voice was obvious.
“But your father made sure nobody spoke.”
Evan gripped the phone tighter.
“Tell me.”
There was a long pause.
Then Martin began.
“That evening, your father invited you to dinner.”
“Yes.”
“I remember.”
“You thought it was about the company.”
Evan nodded slowly.
“It was.”
“But not the way you thought.”
Martin continued.
“Your father wanted to convince you to end things with Leah.”
Evan’s jaw tightened.
“I refused.”
“I know.”
Martin’s voice became quieter.
“That’s why he changed his plan.”
Evan stared at the wall.
“What did he do?”
“He gave you a drink.”
The room felt colder.
“A drink?”
“Yes.”
Martin swallowed.
“You became different after that.”
Evan remembered.
He remembered feeling angry.
Irrationally angry.
Like every emotion had been turned up to the highest level.
He remembered leaving the restaurant.
He remembered calling Leah.
He remembered saying things he never thought he could say.
“You’re sure?”
Martin answered immediately.
“Yes.”
“Because I saw what happened.”
Evan froze.
“You were there?”
“I was.”
“Why didn’t you stop him?”
The silence that followed was painful.
“Because I was afraid.”
Those words carried decades of guilt.
“I worked for your father for thirty years.”
“I knew what he was capable of.”
“But I never thought he would go that far.”
Evan looked toward the living room.
Leah and Ellie were sleeping.
His family.
The family someone tried to erase.
“Why tell me now?”
Martin took a deep breath.
“Because I saw what happened tonight.”
“And I realized I couldn’t stay silent anymore.”
Evan closed his eyes.
For years, he had carried guilt.
He thought he abandoned Leah.
He thought he failed his daughter.
He thought the biggest mistake of his life was walking away.
But what if someone had stolen that choice from him?
“Martin.”
“Yes?”
“I need proof.”
“I know.”
“Do you have any?”
Another pause.
“Yes.”
Evan’s heart raced.
“What kind?”
“Security footage.”
Evan froze.
“From where?”
“Your father’s office.”
Martin explained.
“There were cameras in the private dining room.”
“Your father had them installed because he recorded important meetings.”
Evan’s expression darkened.
“And he forgot about them?”
“No.”
Martin sounded grim.
“He didn’t forget.”
“Someone deleted the footage.”
“Someone tried.”
Evan sat down.
“Explain.”
“There was a backup system.”
Martin continued.
“I saved copies years ago.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew one day you might need the truth.”
Evan stared at his phone.
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
“I’ll come get it.”
“No.”
Martin’s voice suddenly became urgent.
“Evan, listen.”
“You need to be careful.”
“Why?”
“Because if Richard finds out I helped you…”
He stopped.
Evan understood.
“He’ll come after you.”
“Yes.”
The answer was quiet.
“But there’s something else.”
“What?”
Martin hesitated.
“Your father knows someone is helping you.”
Evan looked around.
“What makes you think that?”
“Because he contacted me yesterday.”
Evan stood.
“What did he say?”
Martin’s voice dropped.
“He asked if I had spoken to you.”
A cold feeling moved through Evan.
“He knows.”
“Yes.”
The call ended moments later.
Evan stood alone in the dark office.
Then he heard footsteps.
He turned.
Leah was standing in the doorway.
“You heard everything.”
It wasn’t a question.
Evan nodded.
She looked exhausted.
But not surprised.
“I always wondered.”
He looked at her.
“About what?”
“About that night.”
She walked slowly into the room.
“You were different.”
Evan looked away.
“I thought I was just angry.”
“So did I.”
Leah sat down.
“But something felt wrong.”
Evan looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because after you said those things…”
Her voice cracked.
“I believed you meant them.”
The pain in her eyes was unbearable.
“I thought you finally said what you had been afraid to say.”
Evan shook his head.
“I would never.”
“I know.”
She looked at him.
“I know that now.”
A painful silence passed between them.
Then Evan asked the question he was afraid to ask.
“Did you hate me?”
Leah looked surprised.
“No.”
“Not even once?”
She shook her head.
“I was hurt.”
“But I never hated you.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew the man I loved.”
Her voice became softer.
“And that man would never abandon his child.”
Evan looked down.
For the first time in years, he allowed himself to feel everything.
The anger.
The grief.
The love.
The regret.
“I missed so much.”
Leah’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
“I should have been there.”
“You were kept away.”
“But I wasn’t there.”
The honesty broke him.
Leah moved closer.
“You didn’t know.”
“But I should have known.”
She reached for his hand.
A simple gesture.
But it carried years of pain.
“You’re here now.”
Evan looked at her.
Those four words meant everything.
You’re here now.
Not fixing the past.
Not erasing the pain.
But choosing the future.
Suddenly, Evan’s phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
His face changed as he read it.
Leah noticed.
“What is it?”
Evan slowly turned the screen toward her.
The message contained only one sentence.
Stop digging, or you will lose the family you just found.
Leah’s face went pale.
“They know.”
Evan looked toward the sleeping Ellie.
His expression hardened.
“No.”
His voice was calm.
But filled with determination.
“They threatened the wrong person.”
Leah looked at him.
“What are you going to do?”
Evan picked up the letter from the desk.
Then the fake documents.
Then his phone.
“I’m going to find out everything.”
A pause.
“And this time…”
His eyes turned cold.
“I’m not letting anyone take my family away.”
But what Evan didn’t know was that Richard Mercer had already planned his next move.
Because the message was not meant to scare him.
It was meant to distract him.
While Evan searched for the truth…
May you like
Someone else was preparing to take Ellie away.
