Chapter 5: The Truth Hidden in His Own Words

Chapter 5: The Truth Hidden in His Own Words

The letter trembled in Evan Mercer’s hands.

For several seconds, he simply stared at the paper.

He couldn’t understand what he was seeing.

The handwriting was his.

The signature was his.

The name at the top belonged to him.

But the words inside felt like they belonged to a stranger.

A stranger who knew a truth Evan had spent four years trying to find.

Leah stood frozen beside him.

Her eyes moved across the page.

And the more she read, the more terrified she became.

“Evan…”

Her voice shook.

“I never saw that letter before.”

He looked at her.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

She stepped closer.

“I swear.”

Evan looked back down.

The first line burned into his mind.

Leah, if you’re reading this, it means something happened and I failed to protect you.

His heart began racing.

He continued reading.

I know about the baby. I know about Ellie.

His breathing became heavier.

Ellie was still sitting on the floor, holding her stuffed rabbit, watching the adults around her.

She didn’t understand the details.

But she understood fear.

And she could feel it filling the room.

Evan carefully folded the letter.

Then he looked at Leah.

“Take Ellie downstairs.”

Leah immediately shook her head.

“No.”

“Leah.”

“I’m not leaving you alone with this.”

His expression softened slightly.

“I’m not asking you to leave.”

He looked toward Ellie.

“I’m asking you to protect her.”

That sentence changed everything.

Because they both knew.

Whatever was happening was no longer about their past.

It was about their daughter.

Leah gently reached for Ellie’s hand.

“Come on, sweetheart.”

Ellie looked at Evan.

“Daddy?”

He knelt down.

“I’m right here.”

She studied his face.

“Promise?”

Evan swallowed.

Then he nodded.

“I promise.”

Only after Ellie and Leah went downstairs did Evan open the letter again.

The rest of the message was short.

But every word felt like a piece of a life stolen from him.

I found out what my father was planning.

Evan froze.

His father.

Again.

He thinks he can control everything. He thinks money gives him the right to decide who deserves happiness.

Evan’s eyes narrowed.

I confronted him tonight.

A cold feeling moved through his body.

Because suddenly he remembered something.

A night four years ago.

A night he had always considered the beginning of his downfall.

The night he and Leah ended.

But now…

Maybe that night had been something else entirely.

He kept reading.

If anything happens to me, Leah, I need you to know one thing.

I never left you.

Evan stopped.

His eyes burned.

Because those words were exactly what he needed to hear four years ago.

I never stopped loving you.

The room became blurry.

He closed his eyes.

A thousand memories came rushing back.

Leah laughing in their old apartment.

Leah cooking dinner while music played in the background.

Leah holding his hand when his father criticized every decision he made.

He had convinced himself she walked away.

But what if she had been fighting to stay?

What if someone had pushed them apart?

A noise from downstairs interrupted his thoughts.

Evan quickly placed the letter back into the box and went downstairs.

He found Leah sitting beside Ellie on the couch.

Ellie was asleep against her mother’s side.

The sight almost broke him.

Because this was what he should have had.

Four years.

Gone.

Evan sat across from Leah.

“We need to talk.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

He held up the letter.

“Did you know I wrote this?”

Leah looked at it carefully.

“No.”

“Did you ever receive anything from me?”

She hesitated.

Then slowly shook her head.

“No.”

Evan leaned forward.

“Then what did you receive?”

Leah looked uncomfortable.

“What do you mean?”

“Before you left.”

She became quiet.

“What did you receive from me?”

A tear formed in her eyes.

“A message.”

“What message?”

Leah took a deep breath.

“A message saying you didn’t want to be involved.”

Evan stared at her.

“I never sent that.”

“I know.”

The answer surprised him.

She looked down.

“I know now.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I thought you chose that.”

Evan shook his head.

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“No, Leah.”

“I would never have said that.”

The pain on her face was unbearable.

“I know.”

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Evan asked the question that mattered most.

“Who sent it?”

Leah looked away.

“I don’t know.”

“Think.”

“I tried.”

Her voice became emotional.

“I tried to find out.”

She wiped her tears.

“But every trace disappeared.”

Evan stood.

“Then someone covered it.”

Leah nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you think it was my father.”

“I don’t know.”

She looked at him.

“But I know he had the power to do it.”

Evan walked toward the kitchen.

His mind was moving faster than ever.

His father had lied.

Someone had impersonated him.

A letter had been hidden.

And now someone was sending threats again.

There was only one conclusion.

Someone was afraid.

Someone was afraid the truth would come out.

A sudden sound came from the front door.

Both of them froze.

The lock turned.

Evan immediately stepped in front of Leah.

The door slowly opened.

A man walked inside.

Older.

Well-dressed.

Confident.

The kind of person who never entered a room without expecting control.

Richard Mercer.

Evan’s father.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Richard looked around.

His eyes landed on Ellie.

Then Leah.

Then finally Evan.

A small smile appeared on his face.

“So.”

His voice was calm.

“I see the family reunion finally happened.”

Evan’s expression turned cold.

“What are you doing here?”

Richard ignored the question.

He looked at Ellie.

“She looks just like you.”

Leah immediately stood.

“Stay away from her.”

Richard smiled.

“You still think you have power.”

Evan stepped forward.

“You threatened her.”

Richard looked amused.

“Is that what she told you?”

The room went silent.

Evan’s eyes narrowed.

“You lied to me.”

Richard sighed.

“Your mother always said you were too emotional.”

That sentence made Evan’s blood boil.

“Answer me.”

Richard looked directly at him.

“Did Leah tell you about the letter?”

Evan froze.

Because Richard knew.

He knew about the letter.

Richard noticed the reaction.

And smiled.

“I see she did.”

Evan’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“How?”

Richard slowly walked closer.

“Because I was the one who wrote it.”

The words shocked everyone.

Leah stared at him.

“What?”

Richard looked at her.

“You really thought Evan wrote that?”

Evan felt the ground shift beneath him.

“What are you talking about?”

Richard smiled coldly.

“I wrote the letter to make you believe your father betrayed you.”

Silence.

Then Richard delivered the words that changed everything.

“I needed you angry enough to leave.”

Evan stared at him.

“Why?”

Richard’s face became emotionless.

“Because you were about to destroy the Mercer family.”

Evan shook his head.

“No.”

Richard looked toward Ellie.

“Yes.”

He pointed at the little girl.

“Because she was never supposed to exist.”

The room went completely still.

Leah gasped.

Evan’s hands tightened into fists.

And for the first time in his life…

He looked at his father not as a parent.

Not as a mentor.

May you like

But as an enemy.
