Chapter 14: The Secret Preston Buried for Years

Chapter 14: The Secret Preston Buried for Years

I barely slept that night.

Not because I was afraid of what Preston might do.

That fear was gone.

The woman who had spent years trying to keep everyone happy was gone.

The woman who apologized when she was hurt was gone.

The woman who believed family meant accepting anything was gone.

Now there was only one thing left.

The truth.

And I was ready to hear all of it.

The next morning, I met Detective Hill at the station.

He placed a thick folder on the table.

“This is everything we found.”

I looked at it.

“About Preston?”

He nodded.

“For years, your brother has built his entire life around one image.”

“The perfect son.”

“The successful businessman.”

“The man who could do no wrong.”

I opened the folder.

Inside were financial records.

Emails.

Old documents.

Reports.

And then I saw something that made me stop.

“What is this?”

Detective Hill looked at the page.

“Financial fraud.”

My eyes moved across the document.

The numbers.

The dates.

The signatures.

“No.”

I looked up.

“He did this?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Detective Hill sighed.

“Almost five years.”

I felt a strange mixture of anger and disbelief.

All those years.

All those speeches about responsibility.

All those moments where my parents told me to be more like Preston.

And behind the scenes…

he was hiding everything.

“What was he doing?”

“He was moving company funds.”

“Taking money?”

“Covering losses.”

I frowned.

“What losses?”

Detective Hill placed another document in front of me.

“Your brother’s business wasn’t as successful as everyone believed.”

I stared at the page.

For years, Preston had talked about his success.

His investments.

His achievements.

Everyone admired him.

But it was all built on a lie.

“He was losing everything.”

Detective Hill nodded.

“And the wedding?”

I already knew the answer.

“The wedding was part of the image.”

“Exactly.”

The expensive venue.

The luxury decorations.

The perfect bride.

The perfect family.

It was all a performance.

“But why me?”

That was the question I couldn’t escape.

Why my daughter?

Why that night?

Detective Hill looked at me.

“Because he needed a distraction.”

“A distraction?”

“Yes.”

He explained that Preston had been under pressure from investors and business partners.

People were starting to ask questions.

Money was missing.

Documents weren’t matching.

His reputation was beginning to crack.

Then he came up with a plan.

A public scandal.

A family conflict.

A story where he was the victim.

And I was the problem.

“If everyone believed you were unstable…”

“He could explain anything.”

I nodded slowly.

“And Sophie?”

Detective Hill’s face became serious.

“She was the easiest person to target.”

My fists tightened.

A child.

He chose a child because he thought nobody would question him.

That afternoon, I visited my parents.

I needed answers.

Not excuses.

Answers.

My mother was sitting alone in the living room.

She looked older than she had the day before.

“Did you know?”

She looked up.

“About Preston’s business?”

Her silence answered.

“You knew.”

She wiped her eyes.

“I knew something was wrong.”

“And you protected him.”

“I was scared.”

I shook my head.

“Everyone was scared of him.”

My mother looked at me.

“I thought if I protected him long enough, he would fix it.”

I stared at her.

“But you sacrificed me.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“And Sophie.”

She looked down.

“I know.”

For the first time…

she didn’t defend herself.

She didn’t defend Preston.

She just admitted the damage.

That evening, something unexpected happened.

Claire came to my house again.

But this time, she wasn’t carrying evidence.

She was carrying a confession.

“I need to tell you everything.”

I looked at her.

“I thought you already did.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“There’s something I never told the police.”

I waited.

She took a deep breath.

“Preston didn’t just plan the accusation.”

“What else?”

“He planned to leave.”

I frowned.

“Leave?”

“Yes.”

“After the wedding?”

She nodded.

“He had a backup plan.”

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of backup plan?”

Claire looked at me.

“If everything went wrong…”

“He was going to disappear.”

I stared at her.

“Disappear?”

“He had money moved to another account.”

“Documents prepared.”

“And a place to go.”

I felt cold.

“He was willing to destroy everyone…”

“And then run away?”

Claire nodded.

“He never planned to face the consequences.”

That was Preston.

Always escaping.

Always finding someone else to blame.

Later that night, Detective Hill called.

“Mrs. Bennett.”

“Yes?”

“We have enough evidence now.”

I sat quietly.

“For what?”

“For the full case.”

My heart slowed.

“What happens next?”

“Your brother will be arrested.”

I closed my eyes.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I wanted justice.

But before I could respond, Detective Hill added:

“There’s one problem.”

“What?”

“He knows.”

My stomach dropped.

“How?”

“Someone warned him.”

I stood immediately.

“Who?”

A pause.

Then:

“We don’t know.”

I looked around my house.

The lights.

The quiet rooms.

The place where Sophie slept.

Someone was still helping Preston.

Someone was still protecting him.

And then I remembered something.

My mother’s warning.

He has one more piece of information.

Suddenly, I understood.

Preston wasn’t running because he was afraid.

He was running because he had found something.

Something he believed could destroy me.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

Only one sentence:

You should have stayed quiet, Evelyn.

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

Now you’ll find out what your brother has been hiding.

I looked at the words.

And for the first time in days…

I felt something close to fear.

Because whoever sent that message…

was not trying to scare me.

They were warning me.

The final secret was coming.

May you like

And it was bigger than anything I imagined.

To be continued…
