Chapter 10: The Secret Behind the Wedding Plan

Chapter 10: The Secret Behind the Wedding Plan
The next morning, I woke up with a strange feeling.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Something else.
Clarity.
For the first time since the wedding, I wasn’t reacting to Preston’s actions.
I was moving ahead of them.
And that terrified him more than anything.
Because Preston had always been the person who controlled the room.
He controlled conversations.
He controlled people’s opinions.
He controlled the story.

But now…
I had the one thing he never expected.
The truth.
At 9:00 a.m., Detective Hill arrived at my house.
He looked at the envelope Claire had given me.
“This changes things.”
I watched him read the messages.
“How?”
He placed the papers on the table.
“Because this proves intent.”
I frowned.
“Intent?”
“Yes.”
He tapped the page.
“Your brother didn’t simply react badly after losing his phone.”
“He created a situation.”
“He planned to accuse your daughter before the wedding even started.”
I looked toward Sophie’s room.
She was still sleeping.
A child should never have to wake up and hear words like evidence.
Charges.
Court.
Investigation.
But because of Preston…
she was forced into an adult world.
Detective Hill continued.
“Did Preston have any problems with you before the wedding?”
I thought about it.
Then slowly nodded.
“Yes.”
“What kind?”
I hesitated.
Because the truth sounded almost ridiculous.
“He hated that I was successful without his approval.”
Detective Hill waited.
So I explained.
For years, Preston had measured everything like a competition.
Who had the better job.
Who had the better house.
Who received more praise.
Even as adults, he still needed to be the winner.
And recently…
I had stopped competing.
I had stopped trying to impress him.
That bothered him more than losing.
“Preston didn’t want me to fail,” I said.
Detective Hill looked at me.
“He wanted you to need him.”
I froze.
Because that was exactly right.
Later that day, my parents came over again.
This time, they looked different.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Broken.
My father stood near the window.
“I watched the interview.”
I said nothing.
He continued.
“I saw him lie again.”
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“Now you believe me?”
His shoulders lowered.
“I should have believed you years ago.”
That sentence surprised me.
Because my father was not a man who apologized easily.
But I wasn’t ready to forgive.
Not yet.
“I needed you at the wedding.”
He closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“No.”
My voice became emotional.
“You don’t know.”
I pointed toward Sophie’s room.
“You weren’t there when she asked why nobody helped her.”
My father looked down.
“You weren’t there when she thought everyone hated her.”
His eyes filled with regret.
“And I will never forget that.”
My mother began crying quietly.
“Evelyn…”
I looked at her.
“I spent my whole life trying to make you proud.”
She wiped her tears.
“You were always proud of Preston.”
Silence.
Because she knew.
“I thought he needed us more.”
I shook my head.
“And I needed you less?”
My mother couldn’t answer.
The truth was painful.
But sometimes pain was necessary.
Because pretending had destroyed us.
That afternoon, Detective Hill called again.
“Mrs. Bennett, we found another piece of evidence.”
I sat down.
“What now?”
“Your brother made a recording.”
“A recording?”
“Yes.”
“Of what?”
“A conversation between him and Claire before the wedding.”
My heart started beating faster.
“Can you play it?”
A few minutes later, Detective Hill sent me the audio file.
I pressed play.
At first, there was only silence.
Then Preston’s voice.
Cold.
Confident.
“She won’t fight back.”
Claire responded.
“But what if people believe Sophie?”
A pause.
Then Preston laughed.
“They won’t.”
My blood turned cold.
“Why?”
“Because nobody believes Evelyn.”
I closed my eyes.
The words hurt.
Not because they were true.
Because he believed them.
After all these years…
he truly thought I had no power.
The recording continued.
Claire asked:
“And after?”
Preston answered:
“After the wedding, everyone will finally see her for what she is.”
A pause.
“She’ll lose her family.”
The recording ended.
I sat there silently.
Detective Hill watched me carefully.
“Mrs. Bennett?”
I looked up.
“He wanted to erase me.”
“Yes.”
I nodded slowly.
“But he made one mistake.”
“What mistake?”
I looked toward Sophie’s room.
“He forgot I wasn’t alone.”
That evening, the prosecutor contacted me.
The case was moving forward.
Charges were being considered.
The evidence was overwhelming.
But before anything happened legally…
there was one final thing.
A family gathering.
My father insisted.
“I want everyone there.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because the family needs to hear the truth from us.”
Us.
Not just me.
For once…
my father was standing beside me.
Not behind Preston.
Not protecting him.
Beside me.
I agreed.
The meeting would happen the next day.
Everyone would be there.
Relatives.
Family friends.
The same people who watched my daughter get accused.
The same people who stayed silent.
And Preston would be there too.
But this time…
he wouldn’t have a microphone.
He wouldn’t have control.
He wouldn’t have a story prepared.
May you like
Because tomorrow, the world he built on lies would finally collapse.
To be continued…
